I have a new to me computer and I installed Win98 in it w/IE. I keep getting a couple of message boxes. One warning about viruses and one warning about spyware. Both instruct me to download software at their website for money. I am sure they both are scams. How can I stop these message boxes from popping up? Does anybody have any experiance with this? Any help appreciated. Don Cole SF

Turn off javascript, activex, vb, vbs, running cross-domain fetches, run a web proxy to filter <script*/script> <object....... etc. Firewall all ports not needed (you need email, the temp ports,,, you might wanna turn off 113 too), basically, firewall all ports, and turn on those ports needed for the things *you* do online. The proxy would be needed to filter out automatic filetype downloads you don't need. Kat

Some files labeled as spyware or adware, I can't remember which, I couldn't even get off my computer. Drop MicroSoft completely. Install Linux. No more spyware, no more adware and no more virii, no more defragging your hard drive. You can buy cheap cd's of Linux Distributions here: http://cart.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart You can find a ton of information and download links for a zillion distributions here: http://distrowatch.com/ If you want something to change, you have to change something. Good luck. Ken Rhodes 100% MicroSoft Free!

I typically suggest that users install Windows XP (Professional, if available) with SP2 and enable the Internet Explorer Popup Blocker and the Windows Firewall. I know they're not top of the line, but they work from the inside out, and they work well. Also, DO NOT make yourself an Administrator. Power User should be the highest level of privledges you need. If you need to do a hardware or software installation, either use "Run as..." or log out and back in as Administrator. I've done this with several clients and they've had no spyware/adware/popup issues. The IE Popup Blocker also blocks ActiveX controls, malicious JavaScripts, Java Applets, automatic Spyware downloads, etc.... pretty much everything Kat mentioned. ~Greg On Fri, 26 Nov 2004 23:16:08 -0800, don cole <guest at rapideuphoria.com> wrote: > > posted by: don cole <doncole at pacbell.net> > > I have a new to me computer and I installed Win98 in it w/IE. > > Don Cole > SF > > > >

First of all, don't use Internet Explorer. That is the main cause of these kind of problems. Use Opera, or Firefox. I use Opera, for surfing, and e-mail. I use Firefox for the few websites that don't work well with Opera. Both browsers work perfectly on Win98. If it's an older, slower machine, I would recommend Opera, which starts faster, runs faster, is much smaller, yet has a lot of features that make surfing more productive. Try Opera or Firefox for a week or two, and you probably won't go back to Internet Explorer. About spyware: I suggest you download both Adaware and Spyboy S&D. I use those 2, since they use different scanning techniques, and they both find spyware that the other doesn't find. There are probably also other good spyware cleaners, but I only use those 2, since they're free. Also, you need a firewall and an anti-virus program. To get you started: Opera: http://www.opera.com Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download -- The Internet combines the excitement of typing with the reliability of anonymous hearsay. tommy online: http://users.telenet.be/tommycarlier tommy.blog: http://tommycarlier.blogspot.com

Remove as much of MSIE as you can. Install Mozilla Firefox and use it instead. Also consider software like Ad-aware and Spybot search & destroy, which is for free. Me personally gave up on Windows naerly completely ;) Martin

Another version af the Nitrous virus works on Firefox. Get a GOOD firewall/virus scanner(the cheap ones are no good). You will also need some adware scanners(like Adaware and Spybot S&D). If they don't remove it, you may already have Nitrous, the only way to get rid of it is to reinstall Windows(or even better: ditch Windows altogether and use Linux, Nitrous 2 runs on Linux, but causes no damage(except it crashed Mozzila)). > > > -- > MrTrick > >

I personally don't believe in having to pay to get rid of stuff I never wanted in the first place (Viri, Spyware). Check out AntiVir from www.free-av.com. Here's an exerpt from their site: You'll be amazed how thoroughly AntiVir protects: - detects and removes more than 80,000 viruses - always among the winners of comparison test featured in computer journals - the resident Virus Guard serves to monitor file movements automatically, e.g. downloading of data from the internet - scanning and repair of macro viruses - protection against previously unknown macro viruses - safeguard against cost generating dial-up program - protection against trojaner, worms, backdoors, jokes and other harmful programs - easy operation - Internet-Update Wizard for easy updating - Protection against previously unknown boot record viruses and master boot record viruses - Quality "Made in Germany" - support is free of charge via AntiVir Bulletin Board And I use Adaware and Spybot S&D. But with the tips I mentioned in a previous post, I ran Adaware and all it found was a couple suspicious cookies, which I promptly deleted. Which means I'm 100% spyware and virus free! (All thanks in part to Windows XP built-in security and a free anti-virus utility) ~Greg

> How do you unistall IE? It does not show up in Add/Remove Programs. Heh, heh, heh.... that's funny. You can uninstall IE when you wipe your HD and install Linux. IE has been more and more integrated with Windows as time has progressed. It started with Win9X and IE 4 with the whole "Active Desktop" thing. It was all down hill from there. Its one reason Microsoft got that suit thrown at them a while back.

Ignore the "DSO Exploits" that keeps showing up in Spybot. If you new enough about Windows then you would know that those settings are Harmless Microsoft settings. They will always come back. I've seen that with every computer I've scanned. You should remove it the first time you encounter it because that location can contain damaging code. However, repeat accounts are usually harmless. No easy to find fixes. No more easy to find help. No easy to use software. No more lots of things that Microsoft has done to make our lives much more Productive. Yes, Windows isn't as stable as linux. Yes, Windows needs rebooting way too often. No, I haven't found a Photoshop replacement in Linux. Don't try and feed me Gimp, I've tried it and it isn't good enough. It isn't friendly. Windows is friendly. Linux isn't. Have a problem any setting in Windows? Just ask the closest half-wit of a geek, any 10-year old. Have a problem with a setting in Linux? Looking for a command? Just use man, sorry, I don't know what command I'm looking for! Just ask the closest Linux geek. When you finally find him. Oh, that's right, just use IRC. Wait, what's IRC? Um, try a web search. Oh, you can't reach the web? Problem with getting a modem to work? Can't figure out how to dial the internet? Linux is not friendly. LINUX is not user friendly. It is getting their. It is much closer. but the powers that be are making it pretty hard for it to ever happen. WinModems, along with many other Windows only HARDWARE. USB Printers with Windows drivers, USB Scanners, USB Cameras USB this that and the other thing. Windows drivers all over. But finding Linux drivers is very hard. You have to hunt for a LINUX product. They don't come stamped "Linux friendly". Heck. They don't even come stamped friendly to a particular Flavor/distribution of linux. "RedHat Drivers" or "Mandrake Drivers included". Don't go thinking I'm a Microsoft Lover either. I don't like Microsoft. But I don't see Linux as being a reasonable replacement for the usual Desktop User. I've got an uncle with both Linux and Windows XP on the system. I set the default boot to linux. I told him how it is much safer. He and his wife have attempted to use linux many times. They simply prefer to use Windows. They use Mozilla as Browser. My dad has Linux on one of his computers. He uses Windows instead. I've had Linux on many of my systems. I've used Windows instead. Why? Because I can get it done. Whatever I want to do. I can get it done with Windows. It is like choosing Euphoria over C. I can find out how to get it done and get it done much quicker with Euphoria than with C. Will hand-crafted Euphoria code run as fast as the hand-crafted C? Not, likely. But, I'll have a WORKING prototype much faster with Euphoria than with C. I don't have to compile to test Euphoria code. Save and Double-Click/Execute/Interpret. Versus Save, compile, execute. Debugging is easier. You get more intelligent errors. Same can be said of Windows. Sort of. It is easier to solve your Windows problems simply because Windows is more popular. More people use it. More people work with it. More people work on it. More people talk about working with it and own it. More people support it. And that doesn't even attempt to include Microsoft as considered a center of support for Windows. Windows support is much easier to find even without turning to Microsoft for help. unkmar - Lucius L. Hilley III PS: I'm sorry, but I'm getting tired of the Microsoft bashing. Not because I think Microsoft is great. But because I don't think Linux is so great. A grapefruit is not an orange. They barely taste anything close to each other. Yet people keep trying to compare them. Linux is not a solution to Windows problems. Better Windows is the solution to Windows. Just as better Linux is the solution to the Linux problems
