Hello Everyone, I was just wondering how come not many people in the Euphoria are interested in gaming. I mean Euphoria is a great language for games. Although I don't see many games made in Euphoria. Sure there is a big list, but I haven't seen any lengthy games in Euphoria. I'm just wondering why gaming isn't that big.

I think there are lots of people interested in making games, but it's a big job. Interested, attempted and completed are different things :) Chris Bensler Code is Alchemy

Hello Andy, I for one, find games a complete waste of time. If I'm going to use the computer then I have other things I'd rather waste my time on. I's like people ask me to look this or that for them on the internet. If go on the internet I have my own stuff I want to look up, work on. Don Cole

Why are you interested in games, and why are some people? There are several answers to this: * because of the realistic graphics and their realistic animation; * because you like strategic thinking * because you have time to sped or things to forget about. 1/ requires a long term investment in time and countless trial and error. Not to mention knowledge of specific libraries for advanced graphics creation and management (SDL and friends...). I forgot to mention sound, too. Eu programmers are usually not working full time with it and can hardly do such things. 2/ Ok, sound and graphics are not a problem for chess/checkers/backgammon/gp/... playing programs. Instead, they have to evaluate complex positions, with increasing depth, so as to respond to human player. It takes a clever evaluation function, for sure, but alo darn blazing speed, because of the sheer amount of computations needed. Eu just doesn't compete ith C for this. 3/ There are simply too many free games available on the net. Why would one clone one of them apart from teaching programming to oneself? Most of the games you find in the archive fall into this category; they aren't really "lengthy" games. You may see big games in Eu when Eu becomes kind of a mainstream language. It would need a lot of both promotion and enhancements to get there. Since having very few enhancements is deemed to be an asset, this simply won't ever happen. CChris

Games are one of the things that got me interested in computers, back in the day when anyone could write an interesting one. But I outgrew them, or rather games outgrew me as mentioned in Greg's post. I still think that it would be cool to write a Euphoria clone of Rogue. -- A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that works. --John Gall's 15th law of Systemantics. Hi there, It's interesting that this was brought up because i always wanted to write a good pinball game where the user could have much control over the play field environment, but it just seems like something else more important always comes up that has to be done first, so i never get around to it. I never even got around to starting it and pinball games are not really that hard to do. I've seen some very good commercial ones around, with really nice graphics. Take care, Al E boa sorte com sua programacao Euphoria! My bumper sticker: "I brake for LED's" From "Black Knight": "I can live with losing the good fight, but i can not live without fighting it". Well thanks for all your guys' posts. I was just wondering why. Also, for those of you wondering what type of games I wan planning to create, they would be of any genre and it wouldn't matter what graphics they were(2D or 3D). Of course I'd probably start with 2D. Also, I didn't find it too hard to have a simple game up and running with a stick guy running around the screen. I just couldn't figure out collision detection.

Hi ck, No, i never tried that and this is the first i've heard of it. Radio Shack had a cheap pinball game back in 1980 that allowed some changing of the field too. I got my idea after playing some of the cheaper regular pinball games and realized that it gets pretty boring after a fairly short time so i thought it would be cool if you could change the play table whenever you wanted to, and possibly have it set up random also. I've played some really incredible pinball games with really really great animated graphics, but they all suffer from the same thing, and that's that they get a little boring after a while, and this seems to happen no matter how good they are. The 'real' tables however i used to play for hours way back when. I ended up getting more involved in chess sometime after. I still think it would be interesting to have a pinball game programmed in Euphoria of course, that we all could mod to our own liking. I do have one program in the archive which is a 'little' like pinball, but it's not interactive. A whole bunch of balls bounce around the screen and bounce into each other and off of the walls. It's cool to watch the evolution of the patterns that come about from the random collisions. Take care, Al E boa sorte com sua programacao Euphoria! My bumper sticker: "I brake for LED's" From "Black Knight": "I can live with losing the good fight, but i can not live without fighting it". "Well on second thought, maybe not."

[1] map view (showing land and sea and other ships) if you go too close to land you run a muke) [2] parascope view (as you would see the other ships through a parascope) Of course if you go too low you can't see anything. [3] sonar view (looking at other ships a seen in a radar screen). also there is instrement view that is seen all the time. showing: [1] depth [2] direction of travel [3] speed of travel [4] how long you have been out (there is no limit to this) [5] amount of air, if air goes too low you must surface. You start out with so many torpedoes The object is too sink as much tonage as posible Also the other ships can drop depth charges You must drop low and shut off all engines. After a while you must go topside to get more air and refresh the ballasts. It's been awhile I don't remember every thing. Seems it would be a lot of work to write in Euphoria. Don Cole

Checking on the net, they are fairly minimal block graphics, with character displays, and the concept is a fairly simple large repetitive loop with strategic elements within that (balancing resources damage etc). You should be able to produce either a fairly accurate reproduction, or enhance it with photos of ships and explosions seen through the periscope. euallegro, and eusdl, would be able to handle these quite nicely. Tell you what Don, if your up for it, you create the graphics (some ships, a series of explosion graphics, and the large lettering / numbers - this will determine the overall look), I'll source some sub sounds (pings, explosions, white noise), and we'll put some code together. Al, interested? Chris
