Hi rforno,

Chris,
I *think* that Kat was referring to making ones mail handler show *all* the
"extensions" in an *attachment* [so that attachments that *appeared* to be
.doc or .txt, but actually had stuff after that (so they were actually
executable) could be noticed], and I don't think making the extensions for
files in folders visible would do this?? Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Thank you.
I found that this doesn't work with some extensions. For example, I have a
file that, under DOS, shows as Listacds.xls.lnk, but under Windows (for
example Windows Explorer) is shown as only Listacds.xls, that is, the .lnk
extension is missing, and as you said, this may be a danger if the file
points to a Trojan.

Hmm, i opened a dos box, did a dir /p in \desktop, and got:
SHORTC~1 PIF
WINZIP LNK
WORDPAD LNK
FREECELL LNK
NICKMO~1 LNK
SOLITA~1 LNK
Explorer shows them as .lnk, of course, too. I am using win95B, which
windoze version are you useing? Incidently, you can change the names of
the icons on the desktop to not have the .lnk extension, if you get tired of
looking at it. But with no extension, Windoze won't know how to launch it.
You can, however, get rid of the "Shortcut to" part of the icon name, in my dir
listing above, only one filename starts with "SHORTC~".

I am using Windows 98. Please try to generate a file with a double extension
such as zzz.xls.lnk (it should be an actual link) and try.

For the Windows Explorer: -> Ver -> Opciones de Carpeta -> Ver ->
- check: Mostrar todos los archivos (show all files)
- uncheck: Ocultar extensiones para los tipos de archivos conocidos (hide
known file extensions)
This should tell Internet Explorer (and Outlook Express, and any other
program that relies on Windows standards) to show the full file name.
This 'hide extensions' is the most dangerous trick MS has pulled on Win
users, and is still the default (just bought WinMe, no change from '98).
Shows 'clickonme.jpg.vbs' as 'clickonme.jpg'.
That's one of the reasons I never use WinExplorer. Take a look at
www.ghisler.com.

And if your anti-virus has not been updated to find the latest newest greatest
virus in a
'clickonme.jpg.exe', you will click on the 'clickonme.jpg' and become infected.

I don't have anything that uses a .xls extension, so i can't make an actual link
for a
.xls,, and i don't use win98. I did show you in the listing below that a .lnk
does show in
dos, and it also shows in Explorer.
