Hmm, i opened a dos box, did a dir /p in  \desktop, and got:
SHORTC~1 PIF
WINZIP   LNK
WORDPAD  LNK
FREECELL LNK
NICKMO~1 LNK
SOLITA~1 LNK

Explorer shows them as .lnk, of course, too. I am using win95B, which 
windoze version are you useing? Incidently, you can change the names of 
the icons on the desktop to not have the .lnk extension, if you get tired of 
looking at it. But with no extension, Windoze won't know how to launch it. 
You can, however, get rid of the "Shortcut to" part of the icon name, in my dir 
listing above, only one filename starts with "SHORTC~".
