This has been discussed in the past and here are the main reasons: 1. Not everybody has access to a news server that carries that newsgroup. 2. News servers don't always pick up every message posted to a newsgroup. 3. Not everybody knows how to use newsgroups. (Email or the Topica web interface is simply much easier for most users.) 4. If the newsgroup becomes active, it becomes a target for SPAM... Rob can control who posts to this list, thus keeping the likes of Mike the Spike from spewing hatred and threats at everyone. 6. There are more than a few strange people who's lives are so empty and worthless that the only entertainment they can find consists of 'taking over' newsgroups, burying any useful info in tons of off-topic rambles. 7. Posting to a newsgroup using your "real" e-mail address is a sure way to increase the number of spam messages you get. That's not to say that spammers couldn't gather addresses from this mailing list, but it's a lot more trouble just to get a few hundred names. Regards, Irv

For instance look at: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=alt.lang.euphoria By "signing up" to google groups you are also allowed to post messages which I have done on other newsgroups. I have never received any email from Google after signing up for the free newsgroup service. Is it better than a Topica mailling list??? Do newsgroups go down as much as Topica? Is there "as much" advertising associated with newsgroups? For most people, are Usenet readers easier to use than email? There is really no clear winner. Ray Smith http://rays-web.com

This message is in MIME format. Since your mail reader does not understand this format, some or all of this message may not be legible. ------_=_NextPart_001_01C243B0.6DF0D500 I suppose my take on it all is that I think it would waste everyone's time to change something that works well. Another benefit of using this list, over what 'might' not be available with the newsgroup or google's interface to it, is that emails to this list come straight to my mailbox, and a such I don't need to perform 'any' extra steps to read the threads. Even if the google interface does the same thing, I refer you back to my first sentence... IMHO, the initial actions of signing up for the group in the first place is time I'd rather not spend. ... just my $0.02, of course... but those are 'Canadian' pennies, so not even really worth that... about one and a third cents after conversion, I believe :) Mark. ****************************************************************************** The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged.
