A couple of things:

5. Rob can control who posts to this list, thus keeping the likes
of Mike the Spike from spewing hatred and threats at everyone.

6. There are more than a few strange people who's lives are so
empty and worthless that the only entertainment they can find
consists of 'taking over' newsgroups, burying any useful info
in tons of off-topic rambles.

7. Posting to a newsgroup using your "real" e-mail address is
a sure way to increase the number of spam messages you get.
That's not to say that spammers couldn't gather addresses from
this mailing list, but it's a lot more trouble just to get a few
hundred names.
