Well since my linux box self destructed as of late for both known and unknown reasons, i will not be able to do any actually coding on leftlib which has started me thinking about it a little bit. leftlib is coming along decently and more work has been done lately than in a long time. right now im thinkin of coding a (full?) implementation of signal functionality, would anyone find this useful? most linux (and UNIX for that matter) apps use signals quite heavily when they need to do system tasks or the likes. could Euphoria be used to create robust linux apps with the same functionality if leftlib had the correct support for the many different API's such as advanced file handling, message queues, semaphores, FIFOs, Pipes, native DB support, any requests, etc.? i am dreaming too much about Euphoria on the linux system? is leftlib a lost cause? i would appreciate any feedback on this subject and especially from you Bernie because you always seem to have the most logical and benificial answers to my questions. i wrote up a similar message to send to the list not 5 mins ago but i got disconnected and the message was lost so this is just trying to remember what i typed. Thanks to anyone who is willing to respond with their opinion -- evil, corruption and bad taste cEnsE

cEnsE, The only problem with your leftlib is that much of it will be Linux/Unix only. Of course, it would give Euphoria power that it cannot have in Windows, so why not. It would seem to have a somewhat limited audience at the moment, but just it's existence might enlarge that audience. I keep trying to get Linux set up on my machine and failing miserably, but I shan't give up. By the way, this is my announcement of my active presence on this list. Since Rob has clearly announced his abandonment of this list with his repeated requests that people unsubscribe, I feel free to post here without in any way feeling that I am breaking our agreement. If he continues to post on this list, then we will meet as equals. If this list goes away, I will try to establish another. Everett L.(Rett) Williams rett at gvtc.com

Good to see you back. Not that I look forward to continuous carping about how evil Rob is for not jumping to your orders - but what the heck - the people on this list are pretty tough - if we can live with MTS then we can sure live with you. My suggestion is that you give Rob back the free software you got in exchange for not participating in the list and just rejoin as a regular member. It seems a bit odd that you'd make a deal and then break it this way. Bye Martin

The next step is to get a distribution of Linux that uses a graphic automated install program such as REDHAT 6.0 or better. Of course there are many similar distributions. Only be sure it supports RPM packages and has a GUI install. Using these distributions will install Linux for you as long as your video card is detected properly and the hard drive is large enough, 1GB gives you lots of room. If you use choose to use the KDE desktop Linux will look a lot like windows. Remember to let the automated install do the work for you. Bernie

But the deeper you get involved in it, it's value will grow as you discover new ways of doing things. I'am sure that David Cuny had no idea how much his libraries would lead to. Don't be discourage reinstall that Linux and get going on that library. I think that wrapping signals might also be of value. Bernie

I just wanted to get some feedback about whether leftlib was just going to collect dust 100% for sure or not. thanks -- evil, corruption and bad taste cEnsE

well, if you load libc.so, you can probably call all the standard C funcs. as long as you have a linux box(or at the very least a shell account), you could do it.

Martin, You don't read any better now than you did before. This list is no longer an official Euphoria list. Rob has repeatedly requested that people unsubscribe from this list and subscribe to the Topica list. Our agreement was and is that I would not post on "the" Euphoria list. There can only be one list that is "the" list. Rob has clearly registered his intent that the Topica list be "the" Euphoria list. Even though I was on the Topica list before he took it over, I have acceded to his declaration that it is "the" list. He can't have it both ways. I am willing to maintain our bargain by not posting to whatever list that he declares the official Euphoria list. And, by the way, that software was in no way free. It was earned by meeting our bargain struck in the open on the list. I did not receive a refund of the money that I had already paid for Euphoria as he offered. I countered that offer with the one that was finally agreed to. I have maintained the agreed upon silence on the list. He has now moved the list. As a matter of fact, he never owned this list we are posting on. It was provided by a friend of his. If the individual that actually owns this list chooses to shut it down, I will be disappointed. Third, I am not and will not be a member of any group that is under the control of Mr. Craig until he assumes a sense of responsibility towards his customers. He is showing some faint signs of doing so. His recent reply to Al Getz on the Topica list was the first time that I am aware of that he has even faintly committed to any even slightly specific future change to the language. Until now, the only thing that we had was a vague commitment that he would do "something" about namespaces. You may also note that a few of the new "dogs" on the Euphoria list such as Derek Parnell and Al Getz are getting a bit restive and questioning about where the language is headed. Derek got a little miffed a while back with one of Mr. Craig's short, truculent answers, and here is a quote from Mr. Getz that says it about as well as I could hope to: "Since this kind of change to Euphoria would mean drastic code style changes (presumably cleaner) in ALL programs written in Euphoria, (not just the Winlib) when will this kind of thing take place and what exactly can we expect to be changed? Its kind of silly to do much serious or even semi serious coding untill we get some sort of commitment on RDS's part, right? So is there any forsight for us here Rob? Any recommendations for code now in view of any comming changes? Thanks, Al" Since these boys haven't been much exposed to my "corrosive" influence, I wander where they got such ideas. Since both of them seem to be experienced, production programmers, maybe they are used to a different level of support and response from a commercial product. Maybe they understand that lack of clear input about the direction of the language makes it non-viable for large efforts, especially commercial ones. I know that you are a talented hobbyist, but I have seen nothing that indicates to me that you have much understanding of or care for the world of commercial quality software. That is not necessarily a defect in your personality, but it does mean that you are unlikely to easily understand my viewpoint. Last, you are welcome to question me on any technical point, but I will not take lightly further posting that questions my integrity. Whatever our disagreements, such items are personal and should be taken off this or any other list. On the other hand, I am also open to any such questions that you or anyone else may have if they come by private email. I think that I have made myself clear. >correction: libc.so.6 that is just a sim link to the latest library on your system, prolly around glibc.so.2.2 or so? when you do wrappers of the standard libs in Linux you dont even need to define which shared library you are opening, it automatically opens libc (glibc) -- evil, corruption and bad taste cEnsE
