I have found that best way to get Linux working easily is
first to select a generic compatable video card, ide hd, ide cdrom.
The next step is to get a distribution of Linux that uses a graphic
automated install program such as REDHAT 6.0 or better. Of course
there are many similar distributions. Only be sure it supports RPM
packages and has a GUI install. Using these distributions will
install Linux for you as long as your video card is detected
properly and the hard drive is large enough, 1GB gives you lots
of room. If you use choose to use the KDE desktop Linux will look
a lot like windows. Remember to let the automated install do
    the work for you.
