1. Visual Euphoria wont run

Downloaded visual euphoria, it displays box saying register euphoria
to c stuff & then it closes and nothing.

Basically it doesn't run on my computer running XP

No error file or warning

Oh, if only the source were available, huh? Sounds like an unregistered
translator issue to me.

What's the point? Judith provides her excellent IDE with full source
without charge. Even though I don't currently use it for my Win32Lib
apps I very much respect her work (as I do others who, at least, provide
source so that users can report errors and even contribute fixes and/or
optimizations).

Of course, I could write code in VB and submit an EXE and it would probably
be accepted to the archives... <shrug>

That is one reason.

It has a couple of flaws: one is that you can't hide most of your
"ideas" - many people can run the program and see what it does, just
not "how" it does what it does. They can then come up with their own
methods for producing identical results, all without seeing any of
your code.

The second flaw is that most of us tend to think that our ideas are
somehow "new" or "unique", and they mostly aren't. You can waste a
lot of time trying to keep people from seeing some code which they
could easily find in any college-level programming book. The number
of new and creative algorithms discovered tends to be one every few
years - not everytime you write a program.

No matter how right you are, someone will comment.

Sometimes, indeed, it is not a flame, but just a comment ;-((...

Take them on the chin, they are not personal, just newbies.

Seems like everyone has to be taught this rule. Longhand.

But unless we bang on and on and on and on about it, nothing will ever
be readable ever again. The curse of no longer being a newbie, I guess

I think there have been (at least) four posts already this month I

But, it's like someone else said....people using the contributions page are
using the Euphoria programming language, as well.....So, if they want to
"rip off your ideas", they don't _need_ to see your source code to do it.
All they have to do is run your program to see what it does and then code it
themselves.

Well, rather than waste your time on this discussion, have you tried
the Opera browser? I think it is really nice, much better than IE, but
it tends to crash when loading for me quite alot (lovely and stable
*if* it loads, but I think I have a config problem). Thing is, it's
closed source, what I'd really like is a Euphoria version so I can
track the bugs down. I have some friends coming round tomorrow so if
you could post a working version by say 6:45pm (gmt) that would be
great.

Thanks,
Pete

10. Re: Visual Euphoria wont run

It doesn't matter how long it takes.....if someone _wants_ to "rip off your
idea", they can do it, no matter if it's open or closed source. That's why
laws exist though. It's sort of like saying, "I'm going to write a book,
but I'm afraid that people will "rip off my idea", so I'm going to write the
entire book in a secret code." Although, here's the difference. You can't
copyright an "idea". So, if you use closed source, and someone does the
same thing, but using their own code, I _COULD_ be wrong, but my years of
experience as a legal secretary makes me think they wouldn't have a single
legal problem with doing that. On the other hand, if they were to use your
CODE that you had put out as open source, then they could be successfully
sued.
And, going back to the "Opera" example: Just like someone mentioned
earlier..._IF_ I were interested in doing that....I'd be much more likely
to "rip off their idea" because I couldn't see the source code, than I would
if I _could_ see it. (I don't know how Opera got on the Euphoria achieves,
but heh..you started it, so I'll go with it...because remember this whole
discussion is about things on the achieves being open or closed source..but
anyway). If Opera were on the euphoria achieves with closed source and I
really really liked how it worked, except a few things needed
fixing...........(IF I were that interested in it, as you appear to
be).....then I'd simply recreate the whole thing with the changes that I
think would make it better..and I'd call it something different, since I had
created the new code from scratch. However, if it were in the achieves as
open source, I'd simply make the modifications to the source that already
existed. Either, I'd only use it myself in the modified version..OR I'd
send it back to the creator, as a suggestion.

True. But there are better ways to do certain things than other ways. What
if the original program runs at 100 frames per second, but your clone can
only get 5 frames per second? Then you see the value of the original and
maybe you get enticed to purchase the source.

Hey, are the Mozilla browsers (including Firefox) open source?

The problem with that idea is that if somebody has invented the wheel, and
you only want to change the hubcaps, it would be silly of you to recreate
the entire car. For efficiency's sake, you'd probably buy or somehow
obtain the source. On a BIG project, I mean. On something simple, then of
course you could whip up a clone pretty easily.
