The problem with that idea is that if somebody has invented the wheel, and
you only want to change the hubcaps, it would be silly of you to recreate
the entire car. For efficiency's sake, you'd probably buy or somehow
obtain the source. On a BIG project, I mean. On something simple, then of
course you could whip up a clone pretty easily.
