1. Euphoria related! Sorta...

For Xmas I got winbloze 98 (is that a gift or a curse?) and with some refunds and gift money I'll be getting a Maxtor 8.4 GB HD next week too (sweet). Installing the HD is a no brainer, but how about win98? Anyone have particularly bad experiences with it and Euphoria? And HAWKE', any bad news about it and EUServer? One more thing, is there any disadvantages to moving to the FAT32 vs FAT16? I know if I keep FAT16, I'll have to partition the new drive into 4 or so other drives, but then again that is a small price to pay for anything that would harass me because of FAT32. I ask you guys cuz I trust you alot more than the ppls of usenet land... Thanks, Kevin

It would be extremely speculative to blame with windows 98 for this vs windows 95. The problems usually occur in programs, but are caused due to the bad architekture. Windows 98 is just win95 OSR2 + latest bugfixes + IE4 + latest bug-fixes.. What a positive attitude to think that they actually made something new, that might contain new bugs. In other words it is more stable, and they wouldnt be moving to Fat32 if it wasnt better, and it is. Its much faster, and it has a much better eh.. hardrive corruption protection.. (something they needed themselves I guess.. debuggin the windhoos can corrupt your HD) In other words, you may dislike MS strategy and their software, but it is always 'improving' .. I never seen any MS product that was worse, than what they had an version prior to that.. (except mayeb Vb5 vs Vb3) Ralf

Euphoria runs just as well under windows98. The only problem I noticed is that it ran *slightly* slower, I guess because of all the overhead. I ran Euphoria with Win98 for about a week, and didn't experience anything out of the ordinary. Other people may have other stories, however. It seems every version of Windows seems to have a personality of it's own. > ..... > One more thing, is there any disadvantages to moving to the FAT32 vs > FAT16? It's noticably faster, but there are a few tiny porblems, for example, for some reason, legacy dos software seems to run a lot slower. You should beable to format that as one 8.4gb drive in 98 but you will have cluster overhang(get partition magic 4.0..im told a 8.4 can be partition'd in 2 drives with 2k clusters with pm4.0..norm is 4k to 32k) You are not able to use compression on a fat32 drive. I had 98 on my comp but i never got around to installing euphoria. I install all my win apps..win games...dos apps...dos games... (i wipe my hd's every 5 or 6 weeks)..i never got past the win apps and win games....most of them did not run right and some did not run at all. FAT32 vs FAT16 ---- Battle of the century. I've been running FAT32 for sometime now and have seen no ill effects. I do have one large dissatisfaction with Win9x. That is both Win95 and Win98 and Probably Win NT. The Registry. If that thing gets screwed, you are usually screwed. Simply put, I have come close to reinstalling Win95 several times because of the registry files. I don't understand why Win9x thinks they must be loaded before the DOS like OS is loaded. My oppinion is that if the registry does get messed up that Win9x should still be able to load for the most part but with a WARNING that the registry is corrupt and supply help as to how to fix it. Even if you use FAT32 you should partition your drive Kevin. Partitioning a big drive improves data security and access speed. Notice that FAT32 is propietary of OSR2 an 98, DOS and NT can read it (Windows 2K will). FAT16 has a limit of 65.525 clusters so the biggest volume you can achieve is of 2GB with a 32K cluster size!. That's a lot of wasted space, and if you multiply it by four, you may be loosing several hundred megas. FAT32 can have clusters as small as 4K for 8GB volumes, that makes much better use of your harddisk. Regards, Daniel Berstein daber at pair.com

However, as mentioned, ralf does use win98, and i'm almost certain he has tried EUServer on that OS and if it had _not_ worked, i'm *very* certain ralf woulda lemme know, in that ever so unique way => he uses to inform me of all my oversights :) > One more thing, is there any disadvantages to moving to the FAT32 vs > FAT16? I know if I keep FAT16, I'll have to partition the new drive > into 4 or so other drives, but then again that is a small price to pay > for anything that would harass me because of FAT32. one thing i have not seen mentioned in this respect, is that if you have any disk utilities for win95/fat16, like norton disk doctor or nuts&bolts, they will become useless if you goto fat32. the utilities that come prepackaged with win98 for fat32 are... not the ones i would prefer to use for things like scandisking and defragging and error recovery and such... but, it is faster and more efficient to use fat32... i also second someone's motion for you to split that drive into a pair of drives, maybe even 4 drives... simply for the fact that if you decide to do a defrag or scandisk, generally, you don't need to do all 8 gig worth of data/HD... splitting large HD's into smaller ones allows you better organization of your data/programs AND allows you to selectively scandisk and defrag portions of that 8gig... just try to ensure that whatever size/quantity of partitions you end up with, that you can get cluster sizes of 4K... i've got a particular HD (i actually have several online...) that happens to be 1.6gig. it takes forever to defrag that thing, and my system isnt exactly slow either... if it was me, i'd go no larger than 2gig a partition... i've never come across a situation, even installing *huge* games from cd/whereever using full installs of said games, where i would have needed more than 2gig in one drive... even photoediting has not required more than a few hundred meg HD space at a time (and I do all my own graphic work for things like my web pages and such...) hope this helps... _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/ _/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ ({<=----------------------------------------=>}) ({<=- http://members.xoom.com/Hawkes_Hovel> -=}) ({<=----------------------------------------=>})

This is like the third time, you say something in such direction. It really bothers you, doesnt it ? Ralf
