1. Logic challenge (nonprograming)

This is a logic problem... Just to help with your skills of logic.

There are three lightbulbs in the basement all controled by three
different switches up stairs. You can't see the lightbulbs from upstairs
when at the different switches.

Your task is to figure out what switch controls which bulb in only ONE
trip down to the basement.

2. Re: Logic challenge (nonprograming)

I got it. :) Go down to the basement with three of those screw-in to
plug-in adapters, that make a plug-in out of a socket, and three extension
cords. Plug each cord into a socket and run the other ends back upstairs
with you.

OK, since I've met the 'only one trip to the basement' criteria, the sky's
the limit for the rest of this. Get three 5-gallon pails and fill 'em with
water (use tap water; distilled water won't work). Put one cord in each
pail. Stand in one pail at a time, and throw switches until you feel
something unpleasant. Make a note of which switch caused the
unpleasantness in which pail. Continue with the second pail. Now, after
you've done two, you might think that by deduction, you know the third
cord/switch set, but just to be sure, test it out like you did the first
two.

Pass?

If all the bulbs are connected togther, the common "4-way" switch
configureation will operate lites, giving each switch separate control of the 3
lites.

Well these is actually another rule to this challange. You can't take
anything down with you to the basement and you can't bring anything back
either.

arbitrary switches (a) (b) (c)
Turn on one switch(a) for about a minute, then turn one off and turn another
one on(b). Go down to the basement.

Whichever light is on is (b)
Whichever light is off and warm is (a)
Whichever light is off and cold is (c)

A friend of mine has a remote controlled light switch, problem solved,
sort of ;)

I can solve that without even going to the basement at all.

Put my dog down there.
Eventually he will pee on the floor.
Flip the switches while looking at the reflection of the lights in the puddle.

Once again, nature triumphs over science.

9. Re: Logic challenge (nonprograming)

Turn on switch a. Go to the basement. Unplug one of the bulbs that are not
lighten (lets say 2), and the one which is (lets say 1). Go upstairs and
turn on switch b. You already know that switch a goes to bulb 1. If you see
light now, switch b controls bulb 3, and switch c controls bulb 2. If not,
switch b controls bulb 2 and switch c controls bulb 3.

10. Re: Logic challenge (nonprograming)

Turn on two switches (e.g. sw1 and sw2) for some time. Then, turn of
one switch (e.g. sw2). Go to the basement and check for: 1. Light on is
sw1, 2. Light off and hot (warm) is sw2, 3. Remaining (cold off light)
is sw3.

11. Re: Logic challenge (nonprograming)

I only just saw this, and it's almost certainly already answered, but it
seems *very* easy to me (took a minute or less to solve):

turn on switch "A", wait for 5 minutes; turn it off and turn on switch "B",
quickly go downstairs and FEEL the light bulbs that are off: the one that
is WARM was turned on by switch "A", the one that is ON is turned on by
switch "B", and the one that is off and cold is turned on by switch "C".

12. Re: Logic challenge (nonprograming)

Well, I had a different answer that I sent to the list, but it never came
through. It was so:
Turn on switch A. Go to the basement. Call 1 the bulb that is lighten, and
unplug it. So now we know switch A corresponds to bulb 1. Unplug also
another one that we will call 2. Go upstairs. Turn on switch B. If you see
light downstairs, switch B corresponds to bulb 3, and switch C to bulb 2.
Otherwise, it corresponds to bulb 2, and switch C to bulb 3. Of course you
should return to the basement to fix the bulbs you unplugged ;)
