How do I get the Smiling Faces icons to show and post on Euforum?

I only use the forum not Topica or RSS or anything like that.

Hmmm ...
How about this smile

(I'll only support the basic smiley
 colon dash right-paren
 for now)

Then re-convert it to "colon dash right-paren" for e-mail and RSS,

8. Re: Smiling Faces

One of the things that appeals to me about the Euphoria forum is the maturity.
It makes this forum about code seem professional.

I equate smily faces of any sort with newbees and immaturity. They distract from
the text and they (if allowed) are overused.

Please, Rob, tell me what good little smiley faces are and how they relate to
Euphoria?

I'm not changing what's sent through Topica.

I'm just converting colon dash right-paren
to a smiley picture on the RDS EUforum Web pages.
This also causes the RSS feed to have a picture
instead of 3 characters, but Thunderbird RSS handles
this OK, displaying the picture. I'm not sure about
other RSS readers - I might have to change something.

I look forward to seeing your new RSS reader.
I guess you don't handle full HTML. Just text.
Maybe you can convert the smiley URL back to
colon dash right-paren. But first let's see how other
RSS readers handle it.

A lot of people already type in colon dash right-paren,
or something similar. It won't hurt to see a graphical smiley instead.
It already shows up graphically with some e-mail clients.
I'm not planning to add any more, except maybe the sad face sad

I don't think I need to explain the value of emoticons in
text communication, though the more unusual ones are often lost
on the majority of the audience.

As for how a smiley face relates to "Euphoria" - just
look up "Euphoria" in a dictionary. smile

(See - without the emoticon, you'd be really pissed off
at me, but with the emoticon, you are only mildly pissed off.)

My favorite smiley is ;^) (because I have a big nose) but nothing seems to
translate it correctly.

But anyway, how about winkies? blink I'm not sure what "eyes rolling" looks like
as an emoticon, but it's pretty cool as a graphic. See arstechnica posts, or
http://www.pegasus3d.com/download/giant_rolleyes.gif (shrunk down, of course)

Thanks. But considering some posts, shouldn't there be a "sarcastic",
"perplexed", or "appreciative" face too?

I agree that smileys are a language of their own, but I question their value in
a "text communication". As a writer, I value emotional verbosity more than
interjected emoticons. It reminds my why people cuss -- they don't know the right
words to say. (Wait, is this where the :-} goes?)

Yes, euphoria is hyper-happiness. But I thought EUPHORIA was an acronum for "End

What settings are you using in Thunderbird?
I had used Thunderbird 1.0.2 on Windows with the following settings:
- Main menu:
View > Text of messages > Original HTML
- RSS options:
[v] Show summary instead of whole page

I just tested it again. When I get the RSS feed
<http://www.listfilter.com/EUforum/messages_full.xml>,
smiley pictures in messages are displayed correctly for the moment.
But after closing Thunderbird and re-starting it, they are not displayed
any more (the PC is offline then). It then looks like this:
<http://www.rapideuphoria.com/uploads/tb_rss_smiley.png>

As you already wrote (below), Thunderbird can convert colon dash
right-paren to smiley pictures itself. That seems to work also when the
PC is offline.

> I look forward to seeing your new RSS reader.

Thanks. smile
Unfortunately, it will take some time until the first release. This is
not only because the upcoming holidays, but also because I encountered
problems with the XML library EEBAX.
( Thomas Parslow, did you get my mails? Please reply. )

I have started writing my own XML parser now. This seems to be not too
hard, but before a public release, I'll read the XML specification, and
then I'll probably have to apply some changes. smile
I also haven't read an RSS specification until now. smile
All this will take some time.

> I guess you don't handle full HTML. Just text.

Well, it's not a full blown RSS reader, just a RRS-to-mail converter.
It handles full HTML. What the user will see, of course depends on the
mail client (or other program) s/he uses for viewing, and on the chosen
settings.

The program also has the option to convert HTML to plain text, since
this is what many people prefer in e-mail. In this case, any HTML img
tag is converted to the text "[img]".

> Maybe you can convert the smiley URL back to colon dash right-paren.

Interesting idea, thanks!
I could change the HTML-to-text converter, so that instead of "[img]",
the output would be e.g. "[happy.gif]". This is more meaningful anyway.
Additionally, in the section of the INI file that is related to the
concerning RSS feed, there could be a line such as
   happy.gif = smile

[1]

> But first let's see how other RSS readers handle it.

OK. smile
I'm sorry for being a little impatient.

[1] More challenging would be to properly implement something like
    the following: smile

This is what I read in the meantime in a well trusted German HTML
reference (ad hoc translation by me):
| The 'img' tag must always at least contain the attributes 'src' and
| 'alt'.
| [...]
| 'alt' specifies the text that is displayed, in case it's not possible
| to show the picture. There are many reasons why displaying the picture

According to the standard, I've now changed my HTML-to-text converter,
so that it replaces each img tag with the content of its 'alt' attribute
(if there is no 'alt' attribute, the name of the image file will be used
instead).

Rob, so how about changing the EUforum smiley image tag to

For security reasons, I can't let everyone on the Internet
upload any type of file they like. I have a list of "safe"
file types that I accept automatically. If it's not on the safe list,
it won't be available until I manually make it available.
I've made your file available now, and
I've added .png to the safe list for the future.
