This was too simplistic and not correct.
I think now I have "the answer" (tm). smile

This is what I read in the meantime in a well trusted German HTML
reference (ad hoc translation by me):
| The 'img' tag must always at least contain the attributes 'src' and
| 'alt'.

| 'alt' specifies the text that is displayed, in case it's not possible
| to show the picture. There are many reasons why displaying the picture
| is not possible ...

According to the standard, I've now changed my HTML-to-text converter,
so that it replaces each img tag with the content of its 'alt' attribute
(if there is no 'alt' attribute, the name of the image file will be used
instead).

Rob, so how about changing the EUforum smiley image tag to
<img src="http://www.ListFilter.com/happy.gif" alt="smile">?
