Hi
I have a ? for you guys I am wanting to setup a BBS on my computer,but
don't know what to do does anyone know?.I have PWS that came with windows
98,and dial up server,but can't get them to work.Do you have to have a
special kind of software to setup a BBS if so what kind.

AREN'T BBS's OBSOLETE ??? With the internet you don't need to make long
distance phone calls.

If you really want a BBS, then you need:
several phone lines
several modems
a multi-port serial card ($$)
software to run the bbs
software to manage the modems.
much time to keep it going.
On the other hand, you can run a web server / news server / mail server / ftp
site with 1 modem and an ISP. Many people can connect at the "same time".
This can be done with Windows, but it's much easier with Linux.
The only difficulty is getting a permanent (static) Internet address. Some
ISP's will supply one, maybe at extra cost. You have to ask.

Short answer to obsolete BBS's. They have migrated to the internet.
I would think the same thing if it hadn't been for the fact that
I noticed some no form of BBS's about a year ago.
Typically BBS's where local Systems that users directly dialed into.
Apparently BBS's have migrated to the internet. The internet is not
to be confused with the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web is only
a fraction of the internet. Obviously there are other mediums across
the internet such as Email and Instant chats (ICQ, AIM).
Internet BBS's are called using some sort of Telnet protocol and
some may use obscure ports instead of the default telnet port.
Same is true with many FTP sites. They may use obscure port numbers
such as 6665 instead of the default FTP port number.
Telnet is very similiar to the old Terminal protocols and has many
of the same functions. Some Telnet client softeware have ANSI like
coloring available along with file transfers VIA the old Zmodem,
Xmodem, and Ymodem protocols used with your fondly remembered Terminal
programs.

I use a (Portland) local BBS. I don't think that they are obsolete.

If you were happy enough to revert to DOS, there are some programs floating
around on www.simtel.net in their msdos library that might help. Do a search on
BBS and you'll trawl many fish. If you just want a single line dial-in then the
tools are already there. As someone else has written, the costs go up when you
want to do multiline stuff. Euphoria would probably cope ok with most aspects if
you wanted to use it from go to woe, but it might be better to use what's
already been invented, like Colossus, or WildCat.
Let me know how you get on. BTW, despite the impact of the internet (which is
considerable!) BBSes are not dead.

If you only need one person to connect at a time, you don't need a bbs.
Just set up dial-in networking and let your modem auto-answer.
Might be a good idea to put some passwords on the thing. I'd set up a dialin
user account with very limited permissions.
