Once more with feeling, eh? 

ok, I removed the existing libX11.so link and tried again:
linux:/usr/X11R6/lib # ls libX11*
libX11.so  libX11.so.6  libX11.so.6.2
-- libX11.so.6 appears to be a link to libX11.so.6.2


linux:/usr/X11R6/lib # rm libX11.so
linux:/usr/X11R6/lib # ls libX11*
libX11.so.6  libX11.so.6.2

-- so I tried linking to to libX11.so.6.2
linux:/usr/X11R6/lib # ln -s libX11.so.6.2 libX11.so
linux:/usr/X11R6/lib # ls libX11*
libX11.so  libX11.so.6  libX11.so.6.2
                          
still doesn't work: exu x_demo.exu
 Can not open library libX11.so

I even tried changing this reference to
libX11.so.6.2 - same error message:
-- x11lib.e
library("libX11.so")  -- I changed it back.
