I've never used HTML, but I have written it out in xml format. It's not too bad. The catch is that if you don't give it a .xls extension, IE6 isn't smart enough to check the MIME type, so they see the raw xml. But then Office 2007 complains that the extension doesn't match the actual file type. I suppose a more sophisticated web coder would check the user agent, and try to act accordingly...
