1. Euphoria for the masses

Negroponte's computer for every child project - or whatever its called, seems to
be on the threshold of reality. This is a link to a recent wired article:

Its a very interesting machine - but will only have a 500MHz processor.

It occurred to me that what this machine really needs is a fast, powerful, easy
to learn programming language. Especially with the ability to compile the
interpreted programs to run as fast as possibly on the 500MHz system.

So Rob, is RDC willing to donate a Euphoria package bundled with the compiler to
the project? A number of other computer industry magnates
have made substantial contributions in cash and/or kind.

I've read a bit about this on Ars Technica and on OSNews and it sounds like a
great project.

The problem that I see is that they are only including Free software with the
machine. Now I know that I have argued here that Euphoria *is* free, but it is
kind of a chicken and egg problem

* The source code to the interpreter is free, but doesn't work unless you use
the non-free interpreter
* Or translate it with the non-free translator

Which may or may not be a problem. Note I'm using "Free" as in Libre, not as in
no-cost.

Even though Euphoria is an awesome language, and looking at some of the
luminaries of computer science that are involved in this, I somehow doubt that
they would be impressed. I think they are leaning towards a smalltalk-like or
squeak-like language.

Ok. I just read the Wired article. Very good. Negroponte does mention Squeak,
Logo, and Scratch(??) in it. He also mentions C, which should have the commercial
appeal that the interviewer is talking about.

It would be very cool to get Euphoria on these things and give it a healthy dose
of publicity, but I'm sure there are dozens of other software packages that
authors would like to have included, but there wouldn't be space for them all!

Of course, with networking, they'd be able to download it. Assuming Rob or
someone could find a way to port Euphoria to the machine.

Okay, so I think I'm starting to ramble so I'll just hit the Send Now...

I mean, people like Alan Kay and Seymour Papert! These guys are, like, famous
and stuff!

Well, while that would be a cool idea it would most likely be rejected since
Euphoria's not 100% open source. Apple offered to donate Mac OS X for the laptop
but it was rejected since it's not open source.

The way I see it, if they reject gifts these companies kindly offer them, they
do not deserve anything at all. If you ask me, they have no room to be picky.

Think about it, Vincent. Why shouldn't you be "picky" if you have choices?
Linux was chosen because, being open source, it can be freely adapted to
the needs of its target clientele. Other open source "*Nixes" were available
too - gosh, there's even an Open Solaris now.

For half a billion kids, I'd be willing to sell each of
my products for 1 cent per kid. smile

I think Microsoft will find a way to get this project scuttled.

Heh... if all of them payed you three cents for the binder,
translator, and C source... thats $15 million in revenue.

You can buy quite a few cases a beer with that. ;-D
