1. [OT] Networking problem
Hi
I've tried other tech forums, and was just wondering if anyone here might be
able to help me, or give me a pointer as to where to go (!)
Anyway, I've foolishley stuffed up the address of my shiny new adsl router.
Original config
IP address 10.0.0.2
Broadcast 255.0.0.0
This worked, by setting an ip aliased address on eth0 of 10.0.0.2
netmask 255.0.0.0, and so then I set it to
IP address 192.168.1.10
Broadcast 255.255.255.127
(my network 192.168.1.0)
and found I could no longer talk to it, no matter what combination of
ip 192.168.1.x, netmask 255.255.255.x, and broadcast 192.168.1.x I used
(and lots of other combinations)
Please don't ask why I did this - I have no idea.
In answer to other questions that may be asked, its a Taiwanese AR41/2A
(can't find a company name) conexant chipset, with a reset button on the
back, that doesn't reset the flash memory.
I'm at my wits end, and am about to incorporate the box into the bathroom
extension. Any ideas gratefully accepted.

Firstly, I suggest resetting the router... Most of these things have a
button that will put it back to factory specs...
Secondly, are you using static IP's? If the router has DHCP, you could
save yourself a whole heap of trouble. I used to use static IP's, but
I found it so much easier with DHCP. My router can specify things like
lease time, dynamic range, netmask, DNS server, etc etc etc... tis
good :o)

As Mr. Barnes points out, most routers have a reset button to wipe
out the flash and return the unit to original factory settings. However,
simply pressing the button will usually only reboot the router. In
order to factory reset the router using the button, you would normally
need to hold it down for between 5 and 7 seconds.

I dunno if this will help, but the broadcast address should be 192.168.1.255 and
netmask 255.255.255.127

Thanks for all the replies, but the reset button does NOT reset to
factory settings, and setting a netmask to 255.255.255.127 is not possible
on the computer interfaces.

A couple of other possibilities come to mind:
Hold down reset while powering up?
Maybe you have to open the case and set a jumper?

You could try contacting the manufacture to find out how to reset it.
You said shiny new? Then you have free tech support for x number
of days. You can also take it back and trade for another within
y number of days. My 1st suggestion is resetting it. Just call the
800 number or whatever it is for tech support and find out how to
reset it.

Again, thanks for all the replies - problem sorted.
Took case apart to look for a jumper, couldn't find one, put the case
back together, and it had reset to 10.0.0.2.
Still would have been nice to see how to talk to 192.168.1.10
netmask 255.255.255.127 - I have learnt a LOT about tcp/ip
