Well, I pretty much have all but one (very super rare only happened once in months of lots of playing) bug out of my Asteroids clone, Vector. (I'm not even sure where that bug is... It only happened once. since Euphoria isn't registered I can't tell if it is from KEYREAD.E or whatever.... I need to get a job. [Hey, I'm only 16 and in school... okay, not the best excuse.. :) ], besides, I was playing the shrouded .EXE version... I wouldn't know where it was anyway! :) Anyway, if anybody is interested in playtesting for final tweaking before I send a demo to be put on the Recent Contributions Page just ask... I would like to have the game to be a little more balanced so I need somebody other than me to do it. It also needs some optimization, currently it needs a 486/66 for decent performance. And the manual might need a little work. And maybe a real name, a long time ago (before Euphoria), I created a little Qbasic demo that had a stupid looking ship in vector graphics that could fly around and shoot (but the input was horrible, no KEYREAD.E! :), and I copied that VECTOR.BAS to VECTOR.EX... And I'm not good with naming things. Currently, my spell checker is SPELL, my very early (still working on AI) racing game is RACE, etc... I also have an idea I'd like input on: Codeware. Sorta like Shareware, sorta like Freeware. If you want further development in the game, send me ideas or help with the code (since it is released non-shrouded.) That way I know that people other than me actually like the game and want to see it get even better. The current features in the game are: Pretty cool AI (I just upgraded it so it really needs tweaking to get the difficulty right... seems just a little hard, but I absolutely REFUSE to make it dumber... I want the AI to be as smart as possible, and not cheat at all to defeat the player.) 3 Powerups (Rapidfire, spreadfire and bombs), I need more ideas for more of them. High scores (Yeah, yeah, easy to do, but they are there!) Addictive gameplay. Well, for me at least... I'd like more input on that though... the main reason I've posted this message! :) Okay, so all 3 of you that are least bit interested in the game can hit the reply button now... :) _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Mr. Pilkington, you can send your demo to me. I'll playtest it like it's never been playtested before. (What does that mean?) Hey, I would love to play test a game for you. I'll send you mine when it's playable(not even close yet). The only thing wrong with this kind of game is that it's been done so many times. But (espectioaly if you have a good strong AI) you could add lots of cool stuff to a game like that to make it exceptional. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Add more power ups: speed boost, invincibility, orbital gunposts, etc... 2. Add a level of strategy: have specific goals for certain levels, capability to command "friendly" units (would be REALLY cool), add planets (if you haven't) with gravity, ground based defenses, make money and upgrade ship with better guns, manuvering jets, ect... 3. Have more ships to buy, be able to go up in rank. 4. Have different types of enemies (different species of aliens) who employ different strategies. I wouldn't expect you to add all these features right away but they're just some things for you to think about. I especialy think that planets with gravity and friendly units would be super cool. So send me a codeware copy of vector if you wish and I'll try it out and let you know what I think... and if I have any more suggestions... A few months ago I found a bug in my routine and posted an update to this list. I don't think there are any bugs left, I've used it a lot myself. (I hope ) Regards, Michael Bolin

(no, not, non, what?) you know... like: some_memory = allocate(123498612398) if some_memory = 0 then puts(1, "error: out of memory!\n\n") puts(1, "erasing windoze to get more... please wait") junk = wait_key() abort(1) end if ... etc But hey, I don't check memory very often either (case in point: ModWave), and sometimes, neither does Rob (allocate_string) but then again you only use like 1024 + 4 + 4 bytes. You'll usually get it, no prob. But then again, you never know. [Christian programmers] > In Christ > David Mosley > Rev. Ferlin H. It would appear that there are a few Christian Euphorians out there... ____________________________________________ Divine Program Intervention Between moments of dispensing wisdom, it seems that historical religious leaders had also learned software programming. One day, a great contest was held to test their skills. After days and days of fierce competition, only two leaders remained for the last day's event: Jesus and Mohammed. The judge described the software application required for the final test, and gave the signal to start writing code. The two contestants feverishly typed away on their keyboards. Routines, classes, applets and applications flew by on their screens at incredible speeds. Windows, dialogs, and other intricate graphics began forming on their monitors. The clock showed that the contest would soon be finished. Suddenly, a bolt of lightening flashed and the power went out. After a moment it came back on - just in time for the clock to announce that the last competition was over. The judge asked the two contestants to reveal their finished software. Mohammed angrily said that he'd lost it all in the power outage. The judge turned to the other competitor. Jesus smiled, clicked a mouse and a dazzling application appeared on his screen. After just a few moments, the judge was clearly impressed and declared Jesus the victor. When asked why the decision was made, the judge pointed out the unique characteristic that set the winner apart from all the other leaders: Jesus saves. ________________________________ coding to the glory of God, -- _____ _____ _____ ________ /\ \ /\ \ /\ \ / \ \ / \____\ / \____\ / \____\ / _ \____\ / / ___/_ / /____/ / / ___/_ / / \ |____|/ / /\____\ / \ \ / / /\____\ \ \_/ / / \ \/ / ___/_\ \ \ \ \/ / ___/_ \ /____/ \ / /\ \\/\ \ \ \ / /\ \ \ \ \ \ \/ \____\ \ \ \ \ \/ \____\ \ \ \ \ / / \ \____\ \ / / \ \____\ \ / / \ / / \ / / \ / / \ / / \/____/ \ / / \/____/ \/____/xseal at harborside.com\/____/

(I hope ) I'm pretty sure I'm using the most up to date version. I've done all sorts of key holding down and stuff without causing a crash.... Maybe there was a bug introduced? I never had problems with the earlier versions, and I was using get_key() and stuff in between uses of get_keys() without any problems. (I must have been fortunate...) (It's bugs that you don't know what happened that bug me.. :) Although there is a message I got in the same check that said that there isn't any bugs with KEYREAD.E...... Hmm, the machine hadn't been rebooted in a while, I'll just pass this 'feature' off as a random memory parity error.. :) Besides, I don't think it'll happen often enough to be noticed... (I still want it squashed, but it has to crash again for me to know what happened... It doesn't want to crash for me....) If you want to sleep better at night, try copying safe.e from euphoria\include (v2.0) into your program's directory. Then rename safe.e as machine.e in that directory. Then run your game for a while. It will run a bit slower, but all peeks/pokes/mem_copy's etc. will be checked. safe.e works. I sometimes use it to check contributions to the Web page. It will catch nasty errors that otherwise go unnoticed or that cause an occasional "mysterious" crash. Regards, Rob Craig Rapid Deployment Software

That's exactly when the bug could cause a crash, when the ordinary get_key() was used in conjunction with get_keys(). I haven't received any bug reports since then. Regards, Michael Bolin
