Don't mean to make a problem for you, just seems more than a few people will
try to use XP native to unzip it, not be able to, & give up. I'm not
familiar with Directory Opus, but looking at their website I wonder if
maybe you accidentaly left encryption on as a default? Probably not, just
occured to me from their online doc:

"Ask for encryption and compression settings when copying files into ZIP files:
This option selects whether Opus should prompt you for settings whenever you copy
files into the ZIP archive."

Remember, it unzips just fine in 7-zip.

I've never used 7-zip and don't know why I should have to. I've got enough
suff loading up my had drive.

Of course I've never downloaded eu ver 4.0 either. I'd rather wait a while for
that.

I use it because it opens up pretty much every archive format that's out
there. Also, the WinXP native stuff is often really really slow.

I'm not on my home machine right now.
But, if there was some encryption, dragging the contents wouldn't extract them,
would it?

Really? I can't stand WinRar. I got to the point where I couldn't stand anything
but WinZip, so I paid for a full license. I love WinZip. It's one of the few
Win32 apps that I feel works as expected, and without issue.

Of course, now I run Linux so I just use tar/gzip. :-p

Sorry, not sure what you mean; what I'm wildly guessing is maybe you have
a default option that encrypts files as you zip them, and that could be why
when WinXP tries to unzip them it asks for the password to decrypt. After
a moments thought, however, I would think you'd be asked for a password
FOR the encryption if that default encryption was happening, so maybe I'm
barking up the wrong tree. Oh, maybe you meant that you've TESTED your zip
by unzipping it with the Directory Opus, and got no request for password?
Yeah, if that's the case, it would seem it's NOT being encrypted.

Mike, Matt, thanks, I've seen the threads that mention other utilities to
unzip user contributions, I was just saying, as Don mentioned, that many
people may just be using WinXP native unzip, so it might be good to make
sure contribs can be unzipped by it. I guess at worst case, a general
mention of various other unzip utilities could be included on contribs page
or any individual contribs with known problem unzipping could make their
own reference to various unzip utilities in their description?

I looked at 7-zip and found it disconcertingly confusing, maybe I'm just
used to the WinZip I used to use. :)

Heh, as long as we're dishing on zip packages...

99% of the time I use Windows XP's built-in zip/unzip. I don't like WinZip
hardly at all. It's installed on my work computers and I often have to tell zip
files just to open up with XP's built-in utility.

That said, I also use 7-Zip especially for compressing and decompressing very
large files (backups), and for non-zip archives.

We share same choices. Though 7-zip can compress certain files a bit
further it can't match WinRAR speed. Anyway, the price is just right.

You stripped the meaning from my reply by eliminating what I was responding to.

All I was saying was that there is no way on this green earth that the
suggestion regarding encryption could be valid. If something is encrypted then
it would not open in any utility. WinZIP, 7-zip, monkey-zip or fiddley-zip.

I mostly use the context menus in explorer. Right click, 7-Zip, Extract, etc.
If you open up an archive into the GUI, it's not as nice as WinZip, but
you can alse create tar/gz/bzip/7z archives easily.

Even better: other users (like K. Mertenson) reported being asked for a
password, but could view the contents and drag them out.

I've used WinZip for the last 2o years and never had any problem with it.
  Diffderent versions of course.

This WinXP native unzip I've never seen although I have WinXP. I would like to
  know more about it.

For long files I do use PAR and RAR files. QuickPar seems to work find and is
  free.

I vote that Archives only use WinZip which I believe is the most common.

I doubt there are any files in the Archives long enough to warrant RAR/PAR
  encryption.

That concludes my 2 cents for today.

I think it is fundamentally inconsistent with an Open Source project to use or
require a tool which is not free when a perfectly good one is available and,
based on all accounts, is actually superior in performance (if not usability)
than the pay version.

I have no sympathy for a user having to download a new piece of free software
which enhances the usability of his system, even if he does already have a for
pay piece of software that he considers "good enough".

I vote for 7-zip and let the bytes fall where they may. Friendlier sorts can
vote for an explanatory message indicating the flaws associated with commonly
available tools other than the one in use.

Just a heads-up:
McAfee Site Advisor says of this website:

ultimatezip.com

When we tested this site we found links to goldsofts.com, which we found to be a
distributor of downloads some people consider adware, spyware or other
potentially unwanted programs.

Don,
here's what I mean by "native" WinXP unzip:

If I right-click on a zip "folder" under WindowsXP Windows Explorer,
I get a menu which includes "scan for viruses" (which I always user FIRST)
and "Extract All..."; clicking on Extract All brings up the native XP
  unzipper "Wizard".

This seems to work just fine. Maybe include with the lib description
something like, "if asked for password, OPEN the zipped folder and drag
contents to your desired folder to unzip".

That'l Be The Day Suggestion (Plan 9 from you know where):

Open Source project consistency recomendation. Since gnu utilities such as
tar and gzip are also available under windows, use them to compress and
zip files. Bingo! Seamless cross-platform functionality for a cross-platform
language. A a wxWindow GUI shell could be provided as a demo for the wxWindow
library.

I emailed Don some samples of zip files, and hopefully we can pinpoint where the
problem is.
Another possibility is that the data structure (one single folder, with child
folders and files - could be an issue. More tests needed.

As long as the resulting files are expected to be expandable by a properly
functioning expansion routine built into the Win operating systems (and therefore
also expandable by clones such as WinZip and 7-zip) I see no problem with using
either tar or gzip. If I recall correctly, the primary difference is that a
tarred file will, by design, expand into its own folder which, when expanded from
there, create yet a second top-level folder. At least that is the way that the
drupal folks set it up. It may be that such a redundant layering is not
necessary. But I seem to recall (since it has been a while) that the files are
stored in .tar format and 7-zip unzips them effortlessly. I would assume that
the built in routine within Win does, too.

I'm sure this follows directly from the above. I just don't see it, though.

Hello CChris.

I did get two e-mails from you but neither contained any list of files.

To Don cole: I just had exactly the same problem with the native unzipper in
XP Home,sp2. It asked for a password to unzip win32lib!! I was then told to
use,instead,7zip. I downloaded that and had no problems with passwords.

Are you sure your attachments are properly displayed? I really joined 4 files
(the same) to each.
Any alt address where I could try again?

Hello CChris,

I'm sorry on the first one I did get the attachments.

Now you want me test what file in the archives?

You could email me privately if you wish.
