Have you considered irc? ICQ messes with my desktop, rearranging icons,,,
plus, it is not secure.

An IRC activelist? Besides, with ICQ you can see anyone who is online, not
just those who are in IRC, and ICQ acivelists come with a private discussion
group built in (tho the mailing list is probably more suitable - no ICQ
required)

4. Re: Euphoria Activelist

Irc doesn't have activelists in the same way icq does, but there is a notify
list to let you know if that nick is on that irc net. Irc does several
different private msgs: private rooms (invite-only, secret, or private) with
unlimited population size, person-to-person thru the irc server (query/msg),
or direct tcp between two people (dcc). There is also memoserv to send msgs
to people who aren't online at the time. There are several irc clients,
rather than just the one icq, and none of them belong to AOL,,, and if you
don't like the ones available, it's an open architecture so you can write
your own client (there is an irc server written in Eu on the Eu web page),,
umm,, you could even use most irc clients to write an irc client in...
prolly too slow that way tho. As far as i know, there are way more irc
clients for different puters and OSs than ICQ clients.

Plus, a couple of us got together and made it possible to run Eu from/at
mIRC on irc, which you can't do with ICQ,, and i suspect someone will make a
whole irc client in Eu someday.

Kat,
on irc at the moment.

To all and sundry,

It seems that the greatest problem with ICQ besides it's total lack of
security is the dilution of the discussion. The list is not all that busy that
anything like ICQ is even remotely necessary. The newsgroup appears to
have died from lack of interest. Besides, it's just one more thing lurking in
the memory of my machine, bringing closer the moment that the whole
ball of wax will congeal and I will have to boot '98 that many more times than
I already have to(yeah...I know...get Linux...I am...I am...but I have
customers that pay at least some of my bills that use Windoze). I have made
three attempts at ICQ and each time, within a short time of the implementation
my machine has required cleaning out to get it to run correctly again...or
as correctly as 98 ever does.

The list isn't particularly slow either, so what advantage will we gain by the
use of ICQ...the effort is appreciated, but I just don't see the use.

7. Re: Euphoria Activelist

In ICQ options, you can turn off the option that tells everyone when you are
online.

But thats personal preference. In IRC, there is no option to turn on in the
first place! I still think that to make an online list practical, something
that resembles ICQ would be needed. I am not, however, saying that an active
list is neccessary. It just seemed like a good idea at the time (I'm sure
I'll regret it for the rest of my days :) )
