Irc doesn't have activelists in the same way icq does, but there is a notify
list to let you know if that nick is on that irc net. Irc does several
different private msgs: private rooms (invite-only, secret, or private) with
unlimited population size, person-to-person thru the irc server (query/msg),
or direct tcp between two people (dcc). There is also memoserv to send msgs
to people who aren't online at the time. There are several irc clients,
rather than just the one icq, and none of them belong to AOL,,, and if you
don't like the ones available, it's an open architecture so you can write
your own client (there is an irc server written in Eu on the Eu web page),,
umm,, you could even use most irc clients to write an irc client in...
prolly too slow that way tho. As far as i know, there are way more irc
clients for different puters and OSs than ICQ clients.

Plus, a couple of us got together and made it possible to run Eu from/at
mIRC on irc, which you can't do with ICQ,, and i suspect someone will make a
whole irc client in Eu someday.

Kat,
on irc at the moment.
