1. translator/compiler

---
Is anyone out there other than MTS using or having the Watcom compiler.

I don't see any talk or excitement on the list about using it.

I guess that this is good evidence that the translator is not
  supporting the correct "C" compiler.

It appears that there are no users that have a Watcom.

There is no place that Watcom can be purchased.

I guess that everyone is expected to wait until next year and
see if the free version will be available.

I still do not understand why a ".a" library can't be generated
  for use with DJGPP.

DJGPP as far as I can tell, compiles the generated files of the
Linux version. Of course the I can't link it because of gpm ( mouse )
or ncurses. But it seems that the mouse and graphics can be added
  to the library.

So what is the problem ?

  Thanks,
  Bernie

I agree. I've played around with the translator, and looked at my code in
C, but since I don't have Watcom... :(

Rob, please try to release for another freely available compiler as soon as
possible. I'd love to plunk my money down--once I've actually tried it out!

Same here. Once I can use a compiler I ALEADY have, I'd be glad to supply
RDS with a bit more cash. Until then, EC is just taking up disk space.

MS-crap should not be supported until there are already some free compilers
such as DJGPP being supported. You have to pay for a usefull version of VC++

7. translator/compiler

BLATANT PLUG for LINUX
for about $12 including shipping you can obtain Linux Mandrake 7.2 from
Linux Mall. You will then have gcc, python, perl... and tons of other
"stuff" as well. Plus KDE and GNOME, etc...

IMHO the best plan (though I am well aware I am spitting in the wind) is not
for Rob to try to adopt an MS/Windows compatible compiler, but for the
everyone to migrate to LINUX. In this case it would be far better to move
the mountain to Mohammed.

I have been MicroSoft free now for over a year. There is really no reason
to go back to MS -for the price of MS Windows 2000 you can get COREL Office
2000 Deluxe and COREL'S LINUX distribution to boot.

David Cuny, I think, has recommended that Euphoria support WxWindows -maybe
the best way to end all these translator/compiler headaches is simply to
support gcc and WxWindows.

I am very seriously thinking about providing the local library with one of
the Linux Distributions and keeping it current. The cost to anyone in town
would be NIL. And LINUX support groups / the LINUX Documentation Project,
etc. abound.

Also, remember that eds runs twice as fast on LINUX.

10. Re: translator/compiler

Hi There,

I don't have Watcom either and it looks like most people don't.

As far as I can see the alternatives are:

DOS32 - DJGPP (The only compiler worth looking at for DOS32 programs!)

WIN32 - Mingw (is very solid now with an email list support), LCC-Win32
(has always been great with newsgroup/email list support), MS Visual C++
(OK if you already have it but would you buy it specifically for compiling
Euphoria programs?) and the Borland free command line compiler BCC5.5 (A
very good compiler with newsgroup support)

My personal opinion would be to forget the MS compiler but beleive the
other 3 should be supported at "some" time.
If anyone of those 3 compilers where supported in the near future I can't
see how anyone could complain since they are all freely available.

Are there any other options?

Maybe anyone who is interested in using the translator should vote for
his/her prefered compiler, in a week or so we can lobby Rob to support that
compiler.

Since when does Linux NEED more than 1.58Gb? Linux can run on as little as 200
megs if your really pushing it. ( that means fewer cool things like perl,
python, KDE, GNOME, etc )

Linux with KDE *or* GNOME and GCC wont take anymore than about 400-500 Megs
( this is including all that great linux stuff like, file utils, almost every
compressor, dial-up software, firewalls, routing software, etc. the list goes
on and on )

Did i mention ultimate Un*x Multithreading, Multiuser that Linux is based on?

GNU/Linux vs Microcrap

the battle was over before is began.

p.s. if you only have a dial-up ISP ( like me ) and are rather sick, you can
take the few days it takes to download Linux for free.

Bernie, I do have an Watcom 11.0 compiler an will use it later. Right
now I'm busy with other things so it has to wait some time.

Have a nice day, Rolf

Do you know how hard it is to maintain 800MB hard drive with 20 MB left???

How about a 510MB hard drive w/ 10MB left???
(That's when I gave up and bought a desktop and converted my poor overworked
laptop to LoopLinux!).

Apparently Peanut Linux (http://www.ibiblio.org/peanut/) is supposed to fit
in only 150 meg (48 meg download), and looks to be a fairly complete,
including KDE.
