1. Any freelance programmers here?

I've made a little money programming but only on a word of mouth basis and am thinking about signing up at one of the freelance programmers sites. Just wondering if there are any freelancers here and if so what would you recommend? (and avoid). I hear that rentacoder and scriptlance are reputable.

Also, I ASSUME that I'd need to learn (at least) one other programming language, any advice on which is the most "saleable"? Ideally, I'd like to program exclusively in Euphoria and Linux but I think that's unrealistic. As far as I'm aware it's still pretty much a Windows-centric world out there.

I'm not much into web programming but I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that that's where most of the work will be, so perhaps Javascript and/or PHP would be a good move.

2. Re: Any freelance programmers here?

Actually, if you have access to a Mac, Objective-C is among the more in-demand freelance languages due to the popularity of Apple's line. PHP is also in demand, but usually in conjunction with Joomla, Wordpress, OSCommerce or other such packages. I like guru.com over Scriptlance; but that's just me. Freelancing isn't like local B2B consulting. Expect to earn not much more than US$10/hour if you actually want to get awarded any jobs. Also, you have to have a pretty extensive portfolio that you can actually show. Some people do very well at it, but often those are people who are doing it full-time and then some.

3. Re: Any freelance programmers here?

Thanks for the feedback. hmm, $10/hr? that doesn't sound very appealing, unless you happen to live in India, which I don't!

Maybe I'll just try to find a niche and work on creating a "killer app" for it. smile
