1. EuForum; Next and Previous buttons

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to switch the next/previous button texts?

Now we're using "next" for old issues, and "Previous" for newer once..

To me that doesn't sound very logical..

Any thoughts?

I agree that it doesn't make sense!
Even though the next/previous may "correctly" refer to the numbering of messages as they're saved, it still doesn't make logical sense as we use the buttons to go to previous("next") or newer ("previous") posts. Previous should really mean...previous posts, and next should really mean...newer posts.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Same goes for 'first' and 'last'.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone, because on my screen, "Previous" does mean "go to the message which is previous (in time) to the message displaying on the screen". And "Next" does mean "go to the message which is next (in time) to the message displaying on the screen" such that one continually selects "Next" until one reads the most current message.

So either it has been changed since this message I'm responding to has been posted, or, as I said, I'm in the twilight zone.

I think Derek already suggested Older / Newer instead. No ambiguity. No need to care about where the arrows point, you could even flip them from time to time without damage. I'd second this suggestion.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Would we end up with this 'regime' then;

NEWEST NEWER OLDER OLDEST

??

I emailed you w/ my email address. Did you get it? I don't know what SVN is. I thought this forum was written in Euphoria.

I don't understand the problem it works exactly the way I expect it to do.

I start reading the oldest message. I click "next" and it goes to the next newer message. I click "previous" and it goes to the previous older message. Is there some other expected behavior?

BTW, Jeremy, this is a pretty slick list. I've been reading it almost since it went up but this is the first time I've felt like posting.

Preview, especially, is a nice feature.

Hmm, let's try again...

After my previous post, I realized you were talking about the full message list page, not individual message views. But I couldn't reply to myself for some reason.

So my apologies for misunderstanding, and hopefully this message goes through.

Ah... it hit my spam mail. Had no content and a subject of test... I am not very forgiving w/spam as my email address is very old and my poor mail server drops 90% of it's connections right away due to spam, of the remaining 10% only about 1% of that is even legit. It's crazy. Anyway, yes I got it.

The forum is written in Euphoria. SVN is a tool used to manage source code that may live on many different peoples machines. For instance, I have a copy, you may have a copy, eumario has a copy and Ron has a copy. What happens when Ron modifies forum.ex, as do I, then also you? Now you put your copy on the server, then I do, then Ron. Ron wins, only his changes will be visible. However, with SVN it handles a central storage for source code. In the above example, you commit your code to the repo, I then commit mine and SVN will merge my change into your change. Then Ron commits his and SVN does the same. Thus, in the end all the changes are kept. It manages conflicts (i.e. we edit the same line of code). It manages tags (1.0, 1.1, 1.2), it manages making branches for, say, experimental feature, let's try this out and see how it works out, but we do not want it in forum right now as it's just a try or a proof of concept, etc...

You can read about basic revision control practices on wikipedia:Revision_control and more about SVN specifically (there are many SCM systems) at Subversion's home page.

Again, I must say. Why do the collective intelligence tend to want to be different? Does this look normal?

Define "Normal".
Personally, I don't like either of those two site's layouts.

Hi

To me the position of the newer / older buttons is counter intuiitve.

Most western civilisations read from left to right, so that forward is usually from left to right, and backwards from right to left.

Thus, on the main forum list older and oldest should be on the left hand side pointing to the left, and newer and newest should be on the right hand side pointing to the right, being consistent with the way that we read, and pointing forwards and backwards.

Similarly, on the message itself, older should be on the left pointing to the left, and newer should be on the right, pointing to the right.

This would be consistent with tape and cd players, where the play and fast forward buttons point to the right - uless anyone has ever encountered different.

As I said, most western civilisations read from left to right. I'm not sure how to accomodate those languages that are read up and down, or right to left.
