I gave the HTML route a try, that sounded very easy! I however ran into one problem. It seems that when you output a file as HTML, named .xls, then open it in Excel, nothing has borders except for the table. The rest of the document is pure white. This is going to upset some Excel users getlost

Is there any way around this, or is that what you are experiencing too? I am using Excel 2000.

I've never used HTML, but I have written it out in xml format. It's not too bad. The catch is that if you don't give it a .xls extension, IE6 isn't smart enough to check the MIME type, so they see the raw xml. But then Office 2007 complains that the extension doesn't match the actual file type. I suppose a more sophisticated web coder would check the user agent, and try to act accordingly...

Start the table with the border attribute: <table border=1>

Then, make sure that there are no empty cells. Use <td> </td> instead of <td></td>.

This should take care of your gridlines problem.

The "Hello World" cell has grid lines, but the rest of the document is pure white. No lines anywhere.

How fancy are you trying to get? If you just want basic stuff, the same trick with csv data will work. If you need anything fancy (i.e., merge cells, different borders, etc) then I'd recommend going the xml route.

Headers w/basic formatting, the column data, money formatted, etc... I did go the XML route, btw... We still have a few users on Office 2000 that will need to be upgraded because of it, though sad
