Unfortunately, the forum only sends a notification, not the actual
   posted message.

This is very tricky, as the e-mail needs to have certain
information that the forum-software can use to determine the
correct area to post the message to.

I think it might not be to late to re-assess the choice of forum
software. Tmo the forum you are currently using is one of the
least functional ones. It's predesessor YABB has much more to
offer already (I'm running a YABB board myself) but there are
   even better ones like Ikonboard.

I'm also running a Discus based forum. Discus is the only forum
software I've seen so far that can handle posting through e-mail,
but as I said it's tricky to set up. It also has the best features
to track new postings combined with an incredible amount of user
specific setting for what you want to track. You can even restrict
it's search function to specific areas of interest.

Yet another option to think about is to use a WikiWiki web instead
of a forum. It is the upcoming technology for web collaboration.
If you are aiming at accumulating knowledge in a searchable way
then this is the best way to do it tmo.
A very functional wiki is Twiki. It also has e-mail integration.
