When we're talking about real-world programs, I assume we mean ERP (ala SAP), POS, PDM, and accounting programs for the business world. Programs like this tend to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop on an enterprise scale. Most enterprises are less than willing to invest in a project that doesn't meet the CEO's "staying power" criterion. "Staying power" is generally defined in CEO terms as a healthy position on the stock exchange for at least a year. There's a real chicken & egg situation for this type of thing, and that's not likely to be resolved anytime soon.
