Hello,

have you tried setting up a chat script and starting pppd manually?
can you dial using minicom? if not what error does that give you?

also you should consult the PPP-HOWTO and the MODEM-HOWTO located in your
"/usr/doc/HOWTO/" directory( default ), they are great for stuff aobut modems
and connecting to the internet, etc
