A message thread is simply based on the subject.
You should change the subject when you create a new message
and the message doesn't match your subject.

You have a From:, To: and Subject: field in your email client.

Thread example.
>From          |    Subject
Unkmar        Toast
Derek          Re: Toast
Irv               Re: Toast
Unkmar       Re: Toast


All the subjects match. So, it is considered a message thread of a
given subject.
