The default setting "hide extensions on known file types" is a nice feature for distributors of malware. When a virus program is named say "holidays.jpg.exe", with the default setting it shows up as "holidays.jpg". When the user double-clicks on such a file, because s/he wants to see a nice picture, s/he actually runs a virus program!
