You may have your view settings to "hide extensions on known file types" 
(that's the default).  Do .exe files also have missing extensions?  If 
so, open up a folder, goto "tools" and "folder options" and hit the view 
tab.  Uncheck the appropriate box, and apply the settings to all 
folders...
