You can use as much as you let windows use it.
As to virtual memory.. it never worked for me.

I constantly get 'Program ran out of memory' errors with a bad constructued
loop (where every cycle data is allocated)

ANd I know it never tried virtual memory, for the simple fact that I have 2
gb free.. I would notice it using 2 gb from my HD and then removing it
again..
