The only thing that differs them from the virtual screen you'd use in DOS is that they have something called surface-pitch. This pitch is the "virtual" length of each scanline (can be equal to the actual width, but it doesn't have to be). I released an example of how to write directly to a DirectX (Exotica) surface using assembly code some time ago.
