The DirectX surfaces are just like linear block of memory. The only thing
that differs them from the virtual screen you'd use in DOS is that they have
something called surface-pitch. This pitch is the "virtual" length of each
scanline (can be equal to the actual width, but it doesn't have to be).
I released an example of how to write directly to a DirectX (Exotica)
surface using assembly code some time ago. You can find it under the "recent
contributions" section on RDS's site (it's called "bumpmap effect for
exotica", or something like that..)
