I agree with you 100%, however, your $6 suggestion has it's downside too.
I'm not sure that any contributor who manages to collect a dozen ( $6 ) votes
should necessarily be entitled to it's 'benefits', just because they got lucky
for a month or two.

As 'cute' as it is, the voting system is just a 'momentary' expression of a
(usually)  biased opinion.

RDS would probably be better off by rewarding contributors directly, for
contributions that 'it' considers 'financially rewarding'.
