If you want to use USB, FTDI (Future Technology Developments Inc) 
do some very good chips which are cheap too. Similar cost to a
UART & driver. Very very easy to use. Two types - one has serial
I/O and one an 8-bit parallel FIFO with clocks & full/empty flags.
They even do drivers for Windows which work very well and are well
documented. If I wanted to go USB I would not consider any other
route. I have transferred data to disk at over 1Mbit/sec with no
troubles. Very nice parts. Website is http://www.ftdichip.com/

But yes, for old PCs and simple slow devices, serial is sure OK.
If you can make the blessed PC OS cope with such complex stuff!!
