As far as useful advice, all I can say is:

1 ask lots of questions - people here are helpful.
2 start with something small, so that  you aren't overwhelmed with
    technical stuff that you aren't ready to tackle yet.
3 look at some of the programs on RDS's web site for ideas of what
   other people are doing.
4. try not to start with Windows. DOS is much easier, and more versatile.
