1. Anagram for Topica

Trying to find the answer to the previous post has convinced me that until Topica arranges posts by threads, it will be frustratingly useless as an archive. This is so disappointing when there is such a wealth of information buried in old posts. It should be a treasure trove for newbies but is currently more of a turn off. I don't see the need for a separate forum as that only splits everyones attention and the sum of the parts is usually less than the whole. The current attempt at a separate forum is functionally nice but the colours make it terrible to read and I hate not being able to see everything in one list. The EU community is small enough that all threads can easily be digested in one glance. Having categories and sections just makes posts more invisible. Topicas reliability is miserable but the basic layout would be fine if the posts were arranged by thread. The way traditional newsgroups appear, in say outlook, works brilliantly for smallish lists. Now who can suggest the "best" anagram for TOPICA. Something along the lines of this one for FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily). Cheers Rangi

Topica's search facility is not very good, and only includes the past year of messages. Use the RDS search at http://www.rapideuphoria.com/listserv.htm --- Rangi <totorangi at hotmail.com> wrote: > > > Trying to find the answer to the previous post has > convinced me that > until Topica arranges posts by threads, it will be > frustratingly useless > as an archive. --part1_118.280e8045.2c7cb003_boundary Hi Below copied and pasted from mail washer I disagree. Euman has done an excellent job on the forum, and categorising the posts is the way forward. It take too long to get into topica, and the volume of email digest is horrendous. Categorising allows you to follow areas of interest quickly. And you can change the forum style to whatever you like, and make it as difficult to read or as garish as you want. I feel topica has had its day, look at the other programming forums. Fair enough, Rob has written probably quite a lot of euphoria stuf for the forum, and doesn't want to let it go, but it IS time for a change. Having a separate forum will not split the community, as anyone who follows the mail list will quickly slip over to the forum for a quick look while logged on. Hopefully more and more poeple will move to the forum. Change for change's sake is not good, but change where it is required is called progress. Anyone who hasn't tried it <A HREF="http://h2osoft.homeip.net/phpbb2/index.php">http://h2osoft.homeip.net/phpbb2/index.php</A> Go now Chris PS Rob I recently sent you a small prog (Rolodex) could you change its category to Linux please. It also include an updated text mode user interface library for linux for anyone who's interested. And I can't read things off line, or archive important posts the way I can in my email client. That said, I have to agree it's heaps better than Topicas web interface. With no email interface, though, and hence dropping the RDS search facility, count me out. BTW, none of these work for me: http://h2osoft.homeip.net (since I sensibly have javascript disabled, you should remove that webring button and replace it with the good ol' "if you browser does not automatically connect click here") ftp://h2osoft.homeip.net/Win32lib_VirtWin.exw=20 ftp://h2osoft.homeip.net/VirtWin.exw=20 (all I get is the server returned extended information) Pete

I imagine that you could have this as well as all the current message presentation interfaces. The other significant different is that you need to be connected to the net while reading the posts but that is not required for email lists. -- cheers, Derek Parnell

I haven't gone. If it doesn't support sending the messages VIA pop3 then I am not likely to go. I have stored emails dating back to 1999. You think I'm going to give that up? Stay tuned if you like a tenth of what I wrote, if not, be satisfied = with Topica and have fun with it.=20 Euman TOPICA - Start your own email discussion group. So don't shoot me yet. I do like what you've written. It looks good and works well. It seems that two enhancements might be useful for some people. One would be to send a copy of new posts to people would like that to happen, and the other is to accept emails as posts to the site. I don't know how hard this is but its starting to sound complex. -- cheers, Derek Parnell

A collective effort among many people actually. I only had the ability to weed thru some PHP code make some minor adjustments, secure mySQL and' Make my server run. > It seems that two enhancements might be useful for some people. One > would be to send a copy of new posts to people would like that to happen, > and the other is to accept emails as posts to the site. One of these you can do now (sortof) at the end of each topic there is a link that will allow you to watch that topic and when someone post a new message you should receive an email letting you know there is a reply or new message to be read. As for accepting Email, Its doable but it would take hands-on work Im certain an email guru could share how this might work and possiibly share some code that I could tweak so that those emails are inserted into the database. Im still working on my Installer as well (I hope to finish in this life time) Im just so darned picky about speed and size that I must have rewritten the code dozens of times. Im getting there (slowly) > I don't know how hard this is but its starting to sound complex. Im working to make each forum user selectable, this will be a major role player in activity on the forum simply because that's what Ive heard for years, Im tired of reading email that Im not interested in hearing about (Linux, Windows, DOS, Off Topic discussion) Soon you'll be able to select which of these you're interested in and see nothing else. Ofcourse, you'll have the option to view any or all of the discussion forums aswell. > cheers, > Derek Parnell Euman

So I have to protect my e-mail system anyway, and I actually do so in a powerful manner, using MailWasher, Hamster, the F-Prot realtime anti-virus scanner, and more; but I believe, that's not the topic at the moment. The world don't stop because you need to sleep or go on holiday for a fortnight. Better, of course, emulate RDS's listfilter. And then there is no excuse not to stick an email interface into it!!! Now now kiddies, let's all try to get along, okay? Saying bad words won't help any of us just now. There is another way to approach this. One could show that both positions are equally valid and reasonable. Just a bit more tolerance and willingness to understand what we are saying. euman: "integrated spam control (Moderated forum) (I wont allow Off-topic discussion in a forum topic..." One view of 'spam' is that it is unsolicited content in the context of the recipient. Thus "off topic" content could be seen as 'spam'. However the exact same content IN ANOTHER CONTEXT (a.k.a. a different topic) is not spam. So maybe what euman could do is once a message has been evaluated as 'off topic', it can be moved to the most appropriate (existing) topic area. And as there already exists a topic area called 'Off Topic Discussion', there exists a catch-all for all messages. And depending on legal and moral standards, one could also create a topic area called 'Potentially Offensive Material'. > > I'll delete it > > This what you wrote and Im writing would be removed and considered > > off-topic. > > I see. His site does allow off topic discussions - but only if they are in the 'Off Topic Discussion' area. Juergen also has a point. How does something get deemed as off-topic? As this site is run and controlled only by Euman, I guess there is the answer. Also, what happens to a message sent to the 'Off Topic Discussion' area that is actually concerned with 'X-Windows'. Euman will that be deleted or moved to the more appropriate area - as technically it is off-topic in the context of the 'Off Topic Discussion' area. I can tell you havent even seen the site so how the hek would you know what Im talking about... And how is this sort of response going to encourage people, let alone Juergen, to visit your site? Maybe instead you could describe your site's approach to topic segregation. > BTW: You know what freedom of speech is? Yeah, I took an Oath to protect my Country from threat, Foreign and Domestic, this includes all rights under the Constitution, and for that you're Welcome. Hmmmm... almost the 'Quiet American' syndrome. It seems that implicit in this sort of statement is that one group of people is more important than other groups of people. And Juergen, I'm sure you already know this, but 'freedom of speech' is a myth, even in the USA. Here is Australia, they claim that we have such a freedom, except that we have the harshest libel laws of any Western country. We can say anything we like, unless it offends the powerful. -- Derek

And depending on legal and moral standards, one could also create a topic area called 'Potentially Offensive Material'. It looked to me, that Euman thinks 'spam' and 'off-topic post' are synonymous. That's why I just made the side note: "Off-topic != spam". >>> I'll delete it >>> This what you wrote and Im writing would be removed and considered >>> off-topic. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >> >> I see. His site does allow off topic discussions - but only if they are in the 'Off Topic Discussion' area. I had forgotten about his 'Off Topic Discussion' area. What I wanted to say is this: In order to tell here repeatedly, that he will delete off-topic posts (OK, not on the whole website, only in all but one areas), he puts off-topic posts _here_. (Please notice, that he himself regards his contributions here relating to this as off-topic -- see ^^^^ above.) This is at least paradoxical, no? Juergen also has a point. How does something get deemed as off-topic? As this site is run and controlled only by Euman, I guess there is the answer. Also, what happens to a message sent to the 'Off Topic Discussion' area that is actually concerned with 'X-Windows'. Euman will that be deleted or moved to the more appropriate area - as technically it is off-topic in the context of the 'Off Topic Discussion' area. > I can tell you havent even seen the site That's simply untrue, BTW. Of course, this is a political question. Sorry for bringing this up here. I know moderated discussions from German Usenet. That works completely different. First, the community discusses (with a formal vote at the end), whether or not they want a moderation, and what rules there should be for moderation. Then, two or three moderators are elected for say a year. Not just one person saying, that he'll delete this, and he'll delete that ...
