1. Anagram for Topica
Trying to find the answer to the previous post has convinced me that
until Topica arranges posts by threads, it will be frustratingly useless
as an archive. This is so disappointing when there is such a wealth of
information buried in old posts. It should be a treasure trove for
newbies but is currently more of a turn off.
I don't see the need for a separate forum as that only splits everyones
attention and the sum of the parts is usually less than the whole. The
current attempt at a separate forum is functionally nice but the colours
make it terrible to read and I hate not being able to see everything in
one list. The EU community is small enough that all threads can easily
be digested in one glance. Having categories and sections just makes
posts more invisible.
Topicas reliability is miserable but the basic layout would be fine if
the posts were arranged by thread. The way traditional newsgroups
appear, in say outlook, works brilliantly for smallish lists.
Now who can suggest the "best" anagram for TOPICA. Something along the
lines of this one for FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily).

Topica's search facility is not very good, and only
includes the past year of messages. Use the RDS search

I disagree. Euman has done an excellent job on the forum, and categorising
the posts is the way forward. It take too long to get into topica, and the
volume of email digest is horrendous. Categorising allows you to follow areas of
interest quickly. And you can change the forum style to whatever you like, and
make it as difficult to read or as garish as you want.
I feel topica has had its day, look at the other programming forums. Fair
enough, Rob has written probably quite a lot of euphoria stuf for the forum, and
doesn't want to let it go, but it IS time for a change.
Having a separate forum will not split the community, as anyone who follows
the mail list will quickly slip over to the forum for a quick look while logged
on. Hopefully more and more poeple will move to the forum. Change for
change's sake is not good, but change where it is required is called progress.

PS Rob I recently sent you a small prog (Rolodex) could you change its
category to Linux please. It also include an updated text mode user interface
library for linux for anyone who's interested.

your profile so that if you're a Windows only programmer you
can turn the Linux Forum off and vise-versa, etc...

internet, fetching the mails from my POP3 account, and then
automatically disconnecting. It's impossible to slip over to any forum
in that short time.

How much harder would it be to bookmark a URL in a browser?
This would be just as easy with a major improvement, NO VIRUS's.

Harder, no. At least 20 times slower though. And I can't read things
off line, or archive important posts the way I can in my email client.
That said, I have to agree it's heaps better than Topicas web
interface. With no email interface, though, and hence dropping the RDS
search facility, count me out.

It seems that the major difference between the two methods is that the web
site doesn't present any interface that "looks" like an email inbox. I
imagine that you could have this as well as all the current message
presentation interfaces.
The other significant different is that you need to be connected to the
net while reading the posts but that is not required for email lists.

I can assure everyone that the .js on the forum I created
is very safe....(only used for redirection).
If you want to stay on the Topica email system, Im not twisting
your arm to come over to the right forum I setup dedicated
to Euphoria Programming and might I also add that there
are no advertisments....free to all who choose.
I can allow pruning messages from the forum after they
remain for a specified time at which time they are stored
in another database that is also searchable.
After a short period, I have a belief that only you and a few others
will have the email forum to gripe, groan, moan, b***h, off topic
till you're hearts content.
Myself and other want a forum that seperates topics by catagory
so they spend less time in development. As of now, there isnt
much on the forum I created but there most certainly will be and
with myself and others moderating messages, we will actually be able
to weed out post that make since and have a code repository
(not complete yet) that will knock the socks off trying to search
the RDS archives for code snippets.
Stay tuned if you like a tenth of what I wrote, if not, be satisfied with
Topica and have fun with it.

pop3 then I am not likely to go.
I have stored emails dating back to 1999. You think I'm going
to give that up? That was how I was able to digup that old csv.zip
crap that I made.

I do like what you've written. It looks good and works well.
It seems that two enhancements might be useful for some people. One
would be to send a copy of new posts to people would like that to happen,
and the other is to accept emails as posts to the site.
I don't know how hard this is but its starting to sound complex.

One of these you can do now (sortof) at the end of each topic there is
a link that will allow you to watch that topic and when someone post a
new message you should receive an email letting you know there is a
reply or new message to be read.
As for accepting Email, Its doable but it would take hands-on work
Im certain an email guru could share how this might work and possiibly
share some code that I could tweak so that those emails are inserted
into the database.
Im still working on my Installer as well (I hope to finish in this life time)
Im just so darned picky about speed and size that I must have rewritten
the code dozens of times. Im getting there (slowly)

Im working to make each forum user selectable, this will be a major
role player in activity on the forum simply because that's what Ive heard
for years, Im tired of reading email that Im not interested in hearing about
(Linux, Windows, DOS, Off Topic discussion) Soon you'll be able to select
which of these you're interested in and see nothing else. Ofcourse, you'll
have the option to view any or all of the discussion forums aswell.

If I like, I can configure it that way, that it sends/receives mail

Not harder, but I prefer a mailing list to a web forum.
I can read and write messages offline, I can use the editor of my choice
for writing, I can configure my mail client so that it sends messages
with special contents to separate folders, I can store and search the
posts almost any way I want.
Using Hamster, I can even change a mailing list into a local newsgroup,
and then read and post with a newsreader, and much more.

Regardless what method I use to discuss in the Euphoria community, I
have e-mail anyway. So I have to protect my e-mail system anyway, and I
actually do so in a powerful manner, using MailWasher, Hamster, the
F-Prot realtime anti-virus scanner, and more; but I believe, that's not
the topic at the moment.
Of course Topica's web interface is primitive. But a great advantage of
Topica is, that it has a web interface _and_ a POP3/SMTP e-mail
interface.

I know moderated discussions from German Usenet. That works completely
different. First, the community discusses (with a formal vote at the end),
whether or not they want a moderation, and what rules there should be
for moderation. Then, two or three moderators are elected for say a year.
Not just one person saying, that he'll delete this, and he'll delete
that ...
