1. RE: Euphoria and Linux PS2

Greg:
I think that you will find that the playstation2 uses
a RISC CPU processor and I don't think that you would be able to even
get or afford to purchase a compiler for the PS2 cpu. Then you
would have to write I/O code, etc...

Euphoria code is written for the INTEL CPUs.

So the simple answer is that you would not be able to run Euphoria
   on the PS2.

Arggghhhh... no, no, no...

ever hear of AMD? or Cyrix? those are cheaper and many think in the case
of AMD a better alternative. they may be Intel compatible, but they can
also do more (check out AMD.com). they are hardly incompatible with
Euphoria.

in fact, with the AMD 64 bit Opteron Intel is being put to shame, it's
too bad RDS doesn't want to jump in and offer a 64 bit version of
Euphoria...

zealously for the underdog,

Don't take things out of context and confuse the answer to the
question that was asked.

AMD's are INTEL compatible chips.

Don't be so quick. Andy Cranston ported Eupohoria to HP-UX. Not sure
what processor he was on, but I don't think you can get HP-UX on an
Intel-Pentium compatible processor. He also mentioned that he thought
he could get it to work under Solaris, which is definitely *not* Intel.
Now someone else is porting to a handheld running its own proprietary
stuff.

if you go to the AMD site, or the Via site (which i think took over the
Cyrix), you will find that AMD has added a number of commands at the ASM
level which, while continuing their 'compatibility' with Intel, also put
additional operations and refinement into their CPUs. look under
compilers.

right now, there are NO chips, including Intel, that are really
compatible with the original x86 code. each has refined their product
while maintaining backward compatibility.

the real question, whether or not Euphoria (for Linux/BSD/etc) could be
ported to another processor, can't be answered until somebody tries...

contextually correct,

true, Matt.

i think the definitive answers can be found on slashdot, where i read
regularly about somebody porting Linux (and by inference, possibly
Euphoria) to some PDA, game box, or unusual (8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit,
64-bit) CPU.

ever appreciative of the possibilities,

There's a Linux distro for PS2 so it would be just a matter of
recompiling the source with different -march GCC flag. Rob C
once said Eu uses only few machine code tricks which could be
bypassed so I guess Eu should be compiled on any platform which has
a port of GCC (many architectures!)

btw I've got Solaris 7 for Intel in my shelf. Never tried it, though.
Also FreeBSD and some Linuces. How about start to collect Unices smile
