1. my game library

I just installed my registered version of Euphoria and I've spent the last 24 hours building up my super-fantastic tile-based-game library. I've got routines for bitmaps (the basics), sprites (animated), maps ( with multiple layers), fonts, and some specific objects that pertain to the game i'm making. Total thanks have to go to Michael Bolin for his memory routines. They scream. Today's Programming Project: Real-time lightsourcing. I think I can do this. A friend of mine has explained the basics of gourard shading and that seems simple enough. The question is how to figure out what the intensity of light in a given spot is. Also, you have to examine cells off of the visible map to determine sources of light. This is going to be a hassle, but when you are writing a 320x200x256 graphics engine it has to do something to stand out! Well I just wanted to post something and let everyone know that yet another person is making a game! John DeHope.

>Well I just wanted to post something and let everyone know that yet another >person is making a game! Not sure my opinion matters much... considering I've only looked at euphoria and I don't program or anything (although I used to dream of going to college and learning.. etc) I think games probably help more with advancing the art of programming than anything else (except people working hard) ... It just seems that games motivate people to go beyond the perceived limit of any language. I guess my point is that "yet another person is making a game" sounds like it's a bad thing :> And I say to anyone making games... it's not!!!!!!!!!! And people like me :> who enjoy the games, appreciate it. ok ok... sorry for going overboard... ;) Jeffrey

In fact, colleges are often a little behind the times in this area. There are several people on this newsgroup who are programming wizards, and they are not *old enough* to go to college yet! Microsoft has a quiz on their web site which can show if you have potential as a programmer. You do not need to know anything about programming to take it. If you show promise, there is a list of places where you can get training and jobs. There is so much demand for programmers right now, you can probably get free training. (BTW, you should also get a book from the library and learn all the "buzzwords") >I think games probably help more with advancing the >art of programming than anything else (except people working hard) ... We all benefit by having faster ways of doing things, with less memory, etc. >I guess my point is that "yet another person is making a game" sounds like >it's a bad thing :> And I say to anyone making games... it's not!!!!!!!!!! >And people like me :> who enjoy the games, appreciate it. Greetings >I think you can learn programming without college, or spending a lot of >money. In fact, colleges are often a little behind the times in this area. Of course. I learned Euphoria by just reading refman.doc and library.doc. I am going to college (and majoring in computer information technology) but I'm just now learning QBasic. It kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth after learning Euphoria. >There are several people on this newsgroup who are programming >wizards, and they are not *old enough* to go to college yet! Well, I'm not exactly THAT young but I'm 19 and in my first semester of college. I don't considder myself a wizard but I think I'm doing rather well for my situation. I code since I was 12 in a Sinclair ZX81 with 16Kb RAM (now I'm 24), but only with Euphoria (1-2 years ago) I start making things that work! What this means? Euphoria is the trick. Does it really exist a 'Professional' edition of the QBasic? Basic was my favourite since i discovered Euphoria in a shareware mag! Actually, i think that Euphoria is the best among all the other lenguages that i know(i have not tryed yet the C/C++...it's too much for me!!!) Regards, Luis (Luis is Lewis in spanish,it's my name:)

Greetings, >that the DOS 6.20 QBASIC package doesn't include the BC.exe(compiler) >to compile the *.bas files! ?:O > Can you tell me where a can get a compiler for Basic? > Does it really exist a 'Professional' edition of the QBasic? Well, I've heard of "Quick Basic" that supposedly had a way to compile *.bas files into *.exe files but I've never seen. From what I've read, "Quick Basic" was the version just before they called it QBasic. I read this in a "QBasic for Dummies" book and I'll look again and check for sure. >lenguages that i know(i have not tryed yet the C/C++...it's too >much for me!!!) I've tried "Turbo C++ for Windows Visual edition" and I think I blew a circuit in my head trying to figgure it out. > Luis (Luis is Lewis in spanish,it's my name:) Yeah, I know, when I took spanish in high school that's what my teacher called me. In a message dated 98-05-05 19:04:25 EDT, you write: << EUPHORIA at MIAMIU.ACS.MUOHIO.EDU >> QuickBasic version 4.5 compiles .bas files into .exe files. QBasic is QuickBasic version 1.1 (the free one). Version 4.5 is no longer sold by MicroSoft and is very hard to get legally. Just thought I'd clear some things up.
