Is Winxp worth the time to download and 10 cents for the blank cd to burn it
on or the $300 to buy it?

Since you asked:
Yesterday I installed a new server at one of my clients' offices.
I installed Mandrake 9.1 and Windows XP, dual boot.
The Mandrake install went without any problem, only asking me to
select a password, name the computer, and indicate which workgroup
it belonged to. It then instantly recognized the network, and, using
LinNeighborhood, I could see and connect to all the other computers' shared
directories without a problem. (Other computers are running XP or Win98)
The Windows XP installed ok too, after complaining because the disk already
had dos on it and making me format the drive. It required 4 or 5 tries to set
up the network, before windows finally was willing to admit that there indeed
was a network. After that, XP functioned ok, but *much* slower than Linux for
the identical tasks, like responding to a click on the menu or browsing a
directory.
Among the other critical differences:
1. Windows cost $199.95, Mandrake cost $6.99
2. Windows XP must be "activated" by calling Microsoft.
Without activation, it only runs 30 days.
You can't activate 2 computers with the same copy of XP. MS
supposedly keeps track of things like this.
3. Windows comes with notepad and IE, but not much other software,
while Linux comes with, let's see....
5 browsers, 17 graphics programs, 3 wordprocessors, 3 spreadsheets,
4 ftp programs, 14 audio programs, 6 instant messenger clients,
3 or 4 newsreaders, the apache webserver, complete compilers for
C, C++, Pascal, Fortran, as well as interpreters such as Ruby, Perl, Python,
Java........
You decide which is the better bargain.

For M$, sure! For you, no. You can get free viruses and trojans off the net for
any older and cheaper M$ OS. No need to pay good money to "upgrade" to
fresher backdoors and bugs.

(WinXPpro)In my neck of the woods, in wallmart in las vegas nevada it just(a
couple months ago) dropped to 269 from 300 from 390 from SOME HUGE AMOUNT
either 500 or 900 I dont remember. The price is not what is important, but
the gain I get from using it is. I have win98se on all of my computers, is
there any good reason to make that WinXP? Does it go faster, or easier or
what? I like win98se(a very little be than 95) and I love DOS absolutly. Ive
use carious *nixes(freebsd, redhat, and a few others i dont remember) and
FreeBSD really impressed me. One thing that I'm starting to notice is that
software makers are outdating/obsoleting win98, they use this new Visual
Basic and it has new files for Win2000/XP and they will actually mess up
win98(you need to reinstall it after words). I feel anything that is made
for win98 will work fine on winxp, but not the other way around, and in my
mind this is a crime(cause win98 is nice). Can somebody tell me if
WINE(Windows stuff on linux) runs all the WinXP stuff Win98 won't, Please?

Oh, I forgot what may be the most important point about XP:
You most likely will not be able to load a copy (or the original CD) onto
more than one pc. Not even if you own the second computer.
XP gathers serial numbers and such from the hardware in your pc, then
generates some kind of key which must be sent to microsoft. Microsoft then
sends back another key which allows you to run XP (past the 30-day limit)
Change the hardware, or move to another computer, and it will load, but in
30 days, it quits - unless you allow it to phone home to Bill G.
And guess what - if you try to register 2 different machines with the same
XP CD - they won't let you.
As far as liking the look of XP - I guess there's no accounting for taste :)

A couple of points:
- WinXP is based on NT as its core, so it's more stable than Win98 and its
predecessors. Unlike Win98 and prior releases, it doesn't have DOS at it's
core. This can be good or bad, depending if you play a lot of games.
- Wine will run a lot of software, but not everything, and often needs a lot
of fiddling. Euphoria runs under Wine - even Win32Lib programs.
- CodeWeavers offers a commercial product based on Wine called CrossOver
Office. For $55, you can run a lot of commercial XP software. Not everything,
of course.
- If you want to play with Linux, the easiest thing to do is get a Knoppix CD.
It's a "live" Linux CD, which means that you can boot and run a complete
Linux distribution from CD, without having to install anything on your hard
drive.

I have the same (burned) CD of XP running on 2 machines, no problem...

I've been running XP on 2 machines for over 45 days now... Never called,
emailed, snail mailed, nothing. I've had absolutely no contact with M$,
unless my computer is secretly sending out information at night. (which it
probably is!)

Updates since XP install:
Computer 1:
- added CD burner
- upgraded to DDR RAM (mobo supports both types)
Computer 2:
- added SiS 32 mb PCI video card
- added 128 mb RAM (from computer 1)
Running 45 days and counting...
The *only* problem i've had so far is with service packs... Windows tells me
i have an invalid serial number. I've recently obtained a list of over 100
serial numbers, so i think if i reinstall with a different number, i should
be able to install the service packs. (as long as i pick another one that
works!)

I've changed the style back to the Win 2k style, looks like plain ol' normal
windows! Only the icons are a little more colorful, but i think it brightens
up the appearance, just like painting your living room white instead of
cream tends to brighten up the room...

I was just reading June LinuxFormat which rates suse 8.2 (installs
Codeweavers WINE as standard) and the reviewer "just out of interest"
ran adobe photoshop 5.0 from the windows partition and it worked.
The quote under the screenshot was "Blimey, we weren't expecting that
to work. It's Adobe Photoshop, folks!"
Kind of carries a double edged message.
I ambled over to http://appdb.codeweavers.com/ which lists some 1600
apps various people have tried. I don't know what to make of the
layout on that site, I couldn't decide what to make of problems
reported eg back in 2001, but at least it says whether or not someone
somewhere managed to get it working.

dozen formats it contacts M$.

Caveat:
I have Knoppix. It will not install correctly on any of the 3 pc's I have
tried. It seems to choose an invalid video setting for each of the (totally
different) machines.
However, Mandrake 9.1 (CheapBytes.com, $6.99) loads and runs on all 3,
and only the oldest required any manual settings at all.

Consider This Which Would You Choose In these For Settings
1. WinXP(FREE), *NIX(FREE)
2. WinXP($200), *NIX($200)
3. WinXP($200), *NIX(FREE)
4. WinXP(FREE), *NIX($200)
Thats price per computer and you have 5 computers to network, 2 of them
servers, how many in each setting would you buy? And tell me why. And *NIX
is any unix linux or bsd and WinXP may be traded for and Windows(you
choose).
