If someone has the time, (s)he could set up a webpage with
list of editors that supports Eu syntax highlighting, list of
their features,URLs and additional syntax files for them....

There's also a beta 3.45 that seems pretty solid with multi-file replace
(sub-directories included/excluded).

With Judith's IDE there is a (demo) editor.exw which, editing eg

constant EditMenu = create( Menu, "&Edit", CalcWin, 0, 28, 0, 0, 0 )

when cursor is between the '(' and ')', it shows a tip of the form:

function create (integer class,sequence caption,atom parent,integer x,
integer y,integer cx,integer cy,integer flags)

with the parameter the cursor is on shown in bold. The way it pops up
now is a bit intrusive, to say the least, but there is a handy list of
374 routines and all their parameters already written.

7. Re: Eu Editors

Actually, speaking of the IDE...

I started using it recently, and I find it extremely useful.

The only bugbears I have are with that editor.

Bugbear 1:

The Ctrl key doesnt work. if you hold down ctrl and use the arrow keys, it
should shift the cursor left or right one word. (it doesn't right now)

Bugbear 2:

The Delete key should remove the character to the right of the cursor.
at the moment, it removes one character to the left, and one to the right.

Bugbear 3:
>The way it pops up
>now is a bit intrusive, to say the least.

I agree. If we could have a function key mapped to toggle that on and off
when it pops up, that would be very nice.

Ask for Features (ie not bugbears :))

*When you set 'owner' of a control, it gives you a dropdown list?

*Make the namespace a little more tolerant of typing. IE atm it doesnt like
you deleting all the characters in the name attribute before typing in a new
one. If it could hold off until it loses focus, then perhaps that would be
better.

Anyway, a fine effort Judith, David. Keep it up.

If you click anywhere in the body of editor the Hint popup will
disappear. You can also turn Hints off in Menu Item and use Ctrl+space
to force it to appear when you want it. Perfect

In the next version the Hint popup is in its own canvas window, so you
can move it aside whenever you wish. However I'll wait & see on whether or not that is a good idea...

10. Re: Eu Editors

I was using VC++ editor to edit Euphoria code and was completeley satisfied
with it. I only need to type --// comments to be colored correctly.

I am forced to find another editor cause VC++ sometimes crashes when I try
to run and what is much worse, DELETES current file from disk, very dumb!!

I found AnyEdit at http://www.anyedit.org/ which is in C++ and opensource
and very similar to VC++. It has these features which are important to me:

- syntax coloring of eu code
- find in files
- treeview with directories and files on left
- bookmarks (F2, ...)
- good search and replace (ctrl+f3 searches current word)
- workspaces
- simple macros to record characters typed to insert them next time with
shortcut key, this shortcut can be ANY key (- to input _ character)

It only misses these two features:
- execute eu file
- jump to error line

I could modify source code to add these but don't feel like doing it at the
moment.

I don't know how you people live without "jump to error", because no editor
has it. If any such editor exists I would very like to know about it (ok EE
has it but it's DOS and doesn't have undo). Do you
everytime look at ex.err? Time waste!

The Turbo Pascal IDE did this. The source code was one time an option
when you bought the complete edition, but i don't know if Borland ever made
it free when they opened up the other stuff. The other nice things i miss from
it are stepping thru the source and/or the compiled machine code, modifying
vars while running, and being able to enter any keycode or non-printable non-
chars (like 10, <bell>, etc).

Ah, but then, some practice the zen of coding in which time has no meaning.
When you contemplate the central op-code (sometimes called 'naval') there is no
need to rush. smile

I use EE all the time. I often open up ex.err to look at a trace back or the
value of something. Mostly, I just glance at the error screen and use the goto
line command. I rarely run anything directly from EE. I've had times when my
code crashed and caused EE to crash, too, so I usually have Explorer open and
double click on my app to run.

I have seen it. But an editor to be really usable it has to be very
complete, it has to have also these features (for example), I can't use
editor if it doesnt have these:

-ctrl+f3 search word at cursor, shift+f3 search previous word.
-undo/redo
-ctrl+right or left key to select word
-good search and replace, also search in files on disk
-macros
- something I forgot...

About AnyEdit:
I have modified its source code and added this:
- F9 run euphoria program
- F8 jump to error
- F7 open ex.err to look at it

I think this will be pretty good editor for Euphoria from now on.
I'll submit it in about a week, I'll name it euAnyEdit. I guess I could
write plugin instead modifying program source but this was the easiest.

Workspace is a bunch of files together, like a project. Usually when you're
writing a program it is consisted of more than one file, (it uses libraries
and so on). So you can put these in workspace and every time when you open
workspace those files are usualy on left side in treeview for you to
easy/quick open them with mouse click.

EE is good, but it is DOS and still not very complete. For coding
small DOS games and demos it's perfect.

That's exactly what I did when I used EE some time back for a short while to
write a windows program. One other good thing about EE are its (DOS) colors,
especially if you are running it in fullscreen mode, no windows editor has
those "magical" :) colors.

Yes, without questions, just you must select the
needed FONT and job done, but
your Windows must be adjusted for the needed
languages. Character sets will be correct,
but there is a problem with the keyboard -
you have to use ALT Number to input
needed chars.

Same about Mike's editor and Jfe, Yes.

I use these three ones, ed.ex,
NotePad and edit.com.

> >> [N]Character conversion (OEM/ANSI/Unicode)

This point must be - Character CODES conversion,
The Characters (glyphs) depend just on FONTS,
if the code is stable.
For example, Russian "A" has 128 code on OEM (DOS),
but 192 on 1251(Windows) and 225 on koi-8r(Linux).
