The advertisement is even worse than yahoo groups!!

Let's move again to yahoogroups!

or even better groups.or.id (free)

an mailing list server like yahoogroups with no ads, flexible options
(much more than yahoo's), add member without restriction (can be as
many as you want), etc but no attachments allowed.

I don't like receiving ads that encourage smoking. Filtering the ads out
is probably not that hard. If you encounter a line with 59
equal-characters (perhaps be more flexible: at least 50 times '='), just
find the next line like that. If there are only a few lines in between (<
10 lines?), delete them (and the 2 ===-lines).

Yes, it's bad, and (as you guessed) the ads are inserted
after ListFilter, so I can't stop them. Anyway, it would
probably be a violation of my agreement with Topica
to remove them. I will at least try to remove ads from
quoted material in replies.

We were never there.

Sorry, but it doesn't look like a very English-friendly site.

EUforum generates several thousand e-mails per day.
There aren't many ISPs that are comfortable with that,
unless you pay big bucks or allow them to insert ads.

We could easily set up a "message board" written in CGI/Euphoria.
There would be no e-mail involved, but it would be totally
under our control, with no ads anywhere, and messages would
appear immediately without delay. They would be recorded
in the message archive as usual. The messages could still
be pre-scanned by ListFilter to weed out spammers and other
trouble makers. If necessary we could require logging in with a
password (kept in a cookie for convenience like with the
User Contribution system.)

The downside is you wouldn't get the list delivered
to your convenient e-mail client, and people might not bother
to visit the RDS site very often to check for new messages.

this doesn't have to be true. we just need to find an ISP who will
understand what we're doing with the huge amounts of email. :) And, that
being the case, there will be no cons! (Will we still be able to post
via email? I expect we could...)

well, there is one other con: development, maintenance, updates... :)

We don't need attachments if we post source code.
if anyone needs to send an attached file then it can be in that
64 code stuff that is still text.

Am I the only one who thinks it odd that Lorillard is supporting
this list and we are not?

Its a big world out there -- surely there is someone we can

Wow. Topica magically re-subscribes me for the first time in three
months, and this is the thread.

You can guess what my vote is. smile

I delete attachments that are not readable as text, saves getting viruses and
trojans. I vote against topica again, and against web-based bulletin boards.
The web boards take forever to keep up with the threads, make for huge
pages, and someone will eventually hack the board (see Karl's web board).

Guess no-one ever taught them how rude it is to top-post.

It is pretty universally hated, either they cannot see this or they
are incredibly desperate for money. It would not surprise me if this
invites (not by my hand) a succession of ddos attacks in protest.

There is a strong possibility in my mind that Topica may not be around
by summer, and we should definitely make plans for that event.

Read the signs, folks.

PS That dutch crowd left alt.lang.euphoria long ago. I just posted and
it still seems to work for me.

Yes, I've used sendmail or equivalent in several programs now.
Sending a message is easy. Sending several thousand messages/day
makes ISP's very nervous, especially in these days of
SPAM black-lists. Even if just RapidEuphoria.com got black-listed
it would be bad news.

Initially I'll work on it, then I'll turn it over to Junko.
Maybe we can have modules that others can help us with.
We'll try to do something really quick and simple to
start with, then we'll add improvements as we go along.

I'm using a provider. I can do what I need to do,
but the volume of mail (and handling all the bounces etc.)
would be a problem. My provider isn't very reliable
for e-mail anyway.

13. Re: topica baddddddddd!!!

I noticed there are people that prefer message boards, because the
messages are sorted in categories, and there are people that prefer
mailing lists, because of the speed and the fact that e-mailing is a lot
easier than logging in, going to the appropriate thread and posting.

What if we could make a mailing list that sorts the messages in
categories? Each category has an e-mail address, and the
filter-capabilities of YOUR e-mail client can deal with incoming mails: if
there are categories you're not interested in, you make a filter that
deletes messages that come from the e-mail address of those categories.
The categories you are interested in can also be filtered: each category
has a folder and you make filters to move messages to the appropriate
folder.

Example:
send message -> win32 at eumailing.com -> ... -> client filter -> Win32 folder

Tommy,

No new ideas would ever come up and how would newbies get help?
