1. euphoria for angola

hi all
main reason for post - to thank all for endless help had over the last year
or so by spying on you. hadn't joined list before because i'm just a
learner, prefer to listen. i intended to post a few things soon because
i've been playing with jiri's widgets lately and i'd like to encourage some
interest in them. i also enjoy using win32lib. one of the things i wanted
to post relates to topic under discussion.
i've been considering and researching the possibilities of dos programming.
when i go to the big computer stores with screens everywhere displaying
graphics so fast they go backwards in time, i go to the counter and the
check-out person brings up a dos screen (with an interface nowhere near as
nice as the widgets) to access the retail stock database. same when i buy
fuel or umpteen other things at fancy stores. isn't this an opportunity for
dos programmers, or do i misunderstand the market?
second, thinking along these lines, i hit a stumbling block faced also by
the people in angola, judging by kat's mail. as far as i am aware:_
1. dos6.22 was the last free-standing msdos, and it's 16-bit, so euphoria
won't work (i've tried it);
2. the first 32-bit msdos was version 7, which stands behind win95 and
win98, but it's not freestanding, or at least not installable as
freestanding, unless you want only the setup boot-disk with the basic
system files. so you have to have at least win95 (or linux) to run euphoria.
can someone correct me on this? i actually have an old laptop and a 286 i'd
love to put jiri's widgets on, but i think it's impossible.
3.i've also scoured the net for alternate compatible 32-bit dos with modest
system requirements, but no success.
incidentally, my 2 cents - i don't think windows is immortal (nor will dos
die completely - see above) - but its gui style is - the ease of use from
graphics and standardised controls is what appeals to the public - that's
exactly why the widgets are so good (when you can figure out how to use
them!). they look AND behave just like a second-rate operating system.
cheers, and thanks again.

I don't understand this: Euphoria, the DOS32-version, starts and runs
under DOS 6.22, it contains a DOS-extender to run in 32-bit-mode. Are
you sure you use the ex.exe for DOS 6.22?

Have a nice day, Rolf

[RR:] In fact, "DOS32" euphoria means that it actually *runs* on 32 bits,
but you launch it on any 16 bit dos. It works with dos 6.22, but you should
look at your config.sys to see if you use EMM386.EXE. It probably conflicts
with the Causeway dos extender.
Euphoria is compiled for 386+ platforms, so it won't work on your 286. I too
would like to put it on my HP200 ...

Hi tacitus,
in case of Caldera DOS I guess it's right: don't load EMM386 (mostly set
in config.sys).

6. Re: euphoria for angola

with MS-Dos, you don't need emm386, himem is enough. With DR-Dos things are
different, because emm386 does the job of both (MS)himem and (MS)emm386, and
there is also a (DR)himem targeted on 286 platforms. there should be some
options to configure emm386. In the last release of DR-Dos (7.02) there was
a bug with emm386 messing up all the partition with euphoria- that's why I
went back to 6.22...

Worked on my older system, until I accidentally destroyed it, heh.
