1. Another IDE Bug!

Judith, I have tried and tried to resolve this, but the code is way too complicated to me. It seems the IDE won't respond to my voice commands. I tell it to, "Code next killer app," and it just sits there. I also tried, "Create a game that..." and gave a detailed description, but nothing! Maybe you could fix this in the next release. Thanks!!! ck

C.K., I can't seem to get the IDE to respond to voice commands either. However, I have had *limited* success with voice commands in Windows. But at this point, the only voice commands Windows seems to respond to with any consistency are "Crash" and "Litter my hard-drive with junk". I think that with this being the case, Judith probably put voice commands on hold until some more useful commands can be implemented. :) Virtual B ----- Original Message ----- From: C. K. I think I'll switch to OS X on a PowerMac G4 (dual processor). Apparently those guys are not only fast, but they do the dishes and laundry. They also do Windows... -ck ----- Original Message ----- From: "Virtual B" <behaviorself at netzero.net> To: "EUforum" <EUforum at topica.com> Subject: Re: Another IDE Bug! > > C.K., > > I can't seem to get the IDE to respond to voice commands either. Holy good God, you must be kidding. Like I said in a prior post, I'm NEVER buying Windows XP (I'll pirate it if I *must* have it for some reason). Microsoft has gone TOO FAR in their unethical, monopolistic behavior. Besides that, every prior attempt they've made at developing a stable OS has FAILED!!! BTW, Wintel boxes have NOT "surpassed" Macs... I saw a G4 the other day running Virtual PC, running Windows 95... It was really weird to see Windows 95 running in a Window on a Mac desktop. :) -ck >> I think I'll switch to OS X on a PowerMac G4 (dual processor). >> Apparently >> those guys are not only fast, but they do the dishes and laundry. >> They also do Windows... > A few years ago I would of agreed with you, but PC computers have > surpassed the MAC. If someone wanted to be very diplomatic about it, one might use the word "appropriated". See http://www.aaxnet.com/topics/msinc.html#dr Quote: 1982 - Digital Research sues Microsoft and IBM - Wins - . It was obvious MS-DOS and its PC-DOS variant were simply rip- offs of Digital Research's CP/M operating system. It remained only to prove it contained DR code. DR's Gary Kildall sat down at an IBM PC supplied by IBM and, using a secret code, got it to pop up a Digital Research copyright notice. It's case won, Digital Research received monetary compensation and the right to clone MS-DOS. This is why Microsoft never sued DR over DR-DOS, but used every other means to destroy it. The settlement was under a strict non- disclosure agreement, so few even know DR sued, never mind that they won. End Quote. This is just one of a long list of cases where Microsoft has been sued for "appropriating" someone else's work (and lost). We don't often hear of these cases, because MS standard operating procedure is to pay off the loss and demand a gag order regarding the settlement terms. Regards, Irv

For the past two months while I've been fooling with the Euphoria/GTK library, I've had to re-boot exactly zero times due to lock-ups. That's, of course, using Linux. Considering it's the same pc, and the same careless programmer, either Windows isn't all that good, or the astrological signs were unfavorable. Regards, Irv

That is quite interesting. Back in those days the Theos OS was around ( a competitor to CP/M called OASIS) and Tim Wms also had a back door secret code on OASIS. Do you think they expected ripoff's?? The story goes that when IBM went looking for an OS for their PC they set up meetings with 3 of the GRU's of the time, Bill, Tim, and one other I can't remember. Bill was the only one with the business sense to show up for the meeting. The other's did not. Interesting, I have an IBM and tried to use the Win NT 4 installation CD on another non-IBM machine and because it's setup to read the BIOS the O/S wont install. Me thinks IBM's been burned meybe more than once.... I personally have an issue with this because I bought the damn CD when I purchased my IBM Machine.. If that worries you, take a look at the XP EULA. You can only use it on one machine, and only as long as you don't "substantailly modify" that machine. Just what constitutes a "substantial modification"? That's entirely left to Microsoft to determine. You'll have to call them and ask (beg?) for their permission to upgrade your pc. That's after you have asked (begged) to use it in the first place. It's like having to call Ford on the first of every month to see if I am still allowed to drive my car. I mean, I probably put GAS in it, and maybe even new tires, or a battery..... "Sorry, sir, you'll have to dispose of that Ford and purchase a new one...." I see this as just one giant step toward what Microsoft REALLY wants: for us to pay monthly to use their OS, their software, or perhaps just to remain on "their" planet..... > I personally have an issue with this because I bought the > damn CD when I purchased my IBM Machine.. Actually, no. Read the EULA. You agreed to their terms, supposedly, which state that you can use it only as long as Microsoft feels like letting you use it. (A one-sided "agreement" by the way, which would be illegal if it were for anything else, like a new car, for example) Besides, you agreed to use it on only one machine. You didn't know you were agreeing to that? Too bad. Microsoft may make lousy software, but their lawyers are the best money can brib -- er , buy. Regards, Irv

Hi Euman, I know that MS made dozens of OEM'ed versions (Other Equipment Manufacturer) of DOS and Windows 3.X (I have some ancient Dell OEM'ed diskettes somewhere) but I thought (but I'm probably wrong) that Windows NT 4.0 was just a standard CD burn. I've put Windows NT 4.0 on my (non-IBM) PC from a CD with the following printed on the CD: Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Operating System Version 4.0 For Distribution Only with a New PC Do Not Make Illegal Copies of This Disc 1-2 Processor Edition (c) 1985-1996 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 1096 Part No. 000-48303 I guess the important info is the Part Number stuff. If your Win NT 4.0 CD ROM is the same as mine then I can't explain why you can't install it on your non-IBM system. If your CD has different info on it them maybe you have a "vendor locked" version which seems rather unfair. Regards, FP. I have a vendor locked edition..But the O/S was part of the purchase of the machine... Yes it does state that you may use this on only one machine so tell me, why if I formated the IBM and put LINUX on that box (which I did) now I have a drink coaster.... I didn't catch who wrote this: > > I know that MS made dozens of OEM'ed versions (Other Equipment > > Manufacturer) But OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer. Since it is obvious MS didn't make the equipment the OS ran on, it makes no sense to call the company who made that equipment the Other Equipment Manufacturer. Kat

I have customers, some of whom could lose tens of thousands of dollars if Windows crashes on them at the wrong time (is there ever a right time?) If the last backup was made 1 hour ago, then everybody in the shop has to do that hour's work all over again. Even if they don't lose any data, there's the non-productive time spent rebooting and trying to get back onto the network. I'm converting as many as possible to Linux. Regards, Irv

I keep pressing CTRL+S (saving) when writing code, it's in habit now, so almost never has happened to me that I lost some of my work. Mostly IE crashes, although when i sometimes run some simple .ex program with maybe nothing in it, or just simple statement, like puts (), it completely blocks my computer. You have to remeber not to have unsaved work somewhere and starting a euphoria program at the same time. ----- Original Message ----- From: Irv Mullins <irvm at ellijay.com> Subject: Re: Another IDE Bug! > > On Friday 17 August 2001 16:08, Tone Skoda wrote: > > > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: Irv Mullins <irvm at ellijay.com> > > > > > When developing Windows programs, I feel lucky if I only have to > > > ctl-alt-del once or twice a day, when my program (or something else) > > > locks everything up. > > > > > > For the past two months while I've been fooling with the Euphoria/GTK > > > library, I've had to re-boot exactly zero times due to lock-ups. > > > That's, of course, using Linux. > > > > If I'd be using linux for something it would be because it is supposed not > > to crash so often like Windows, whose crashes are just horrible, > > esspecially Internet Explorer crashes all the time. I don't know why your vendor locked Win NT 4.0 install CD won't allow a re-install on the very same machine. Perhaps the original install was never performed with the CD you have. Maybe they used a different CD and the CD you have was already "drinks coaster" material from day one As it happens I have a spare Win NT 4.0 install CD I'd be happy to donate. Email me privately if your interested (use either of my email addresses - I check both every time I go online). Regards, FP. I have a client who uses IE to look up prices on a supplier's website, and enters them into a VB accounting package. If IE freezes, the VB data files get corrupted, usually ending up with a lot of html code where customer's invoices used to be. Not a good thing. What's worse is that VB doesn't detect the error, just ignores the html, and naturally the account balances are screwed up. Luckily, he uses a Euphoria program to print the statements, and Euphoria does see the garbage, and reports an error. Regards, Irv
