1. Off topic: Real floppy problems

Just yesterday, I turned on the computer...only to hear the floppy drive
buzz. It wasn't that normal buzz, but a buzz. You can even put your hand on
the drive and feel it vibrating. Then POST told me:

Floppy drive A: Failure
<F1> for setup <ESC> to boot <F2> for Option ROM screen

Now my floppy drive shows up as a plain ol' removable disk drive under Win-
dows. Under DOS it takes several seconds just to get an "Abort, Retry,
Fail?" message, and under Windows the thing just locks up. Under the DOS
prog MSD, drive A: cloned itself. Under the Device Manager, the floppy drive
controller icon has an exclamation point over it and it tells me it's not
working right. What gives? Is this the end of my faithful floppy drive?

Could be. Sound's like something might be stuck in the drive, preventing
the heads from moving. (Something I saw frequently in my repair days,
typically caused by a metal floppy protector that came off in the drive.
If you have kids, then you never know what might be in there.) You might
have to pop the floppy drive out of your system and take the cover off of
it to get a closer look. If there are no obstructions, you might check
that your BIOS has the floppy controller enabled and that drive A: is
properly set for 3.5 inch 1.44 MB (I doubt that this would be the source of
your problem, though.)
