1. Registration

Dear EU users,

Just a thought.

Maybe it is a time to reset the registration
rules?

Say, registered user is just a contributing one ...
to Contrib page. Plus a donating one ... to RDS.
Plus all already registered.
Then Micro-Economy will work as it already works.

To be more exact, this Micro-Economy was something
like to play or game anyway. It is just a score or
bill or count of a user's happiness regarding some
contribution. This game was very nice, why not to
keep it and now, when EU is absolutely free?
To keep it without any and all obligations of RDS,
naturally. smile

The micro-economy should be replaced with a voting system and a comment system
for downloads.

Rob has previously expressed concern for the possibility of voting system abuse
though.

IMO, if people have to sign up with email verification before being able to post
contributions, it will deter most chances of abuse.

Another problem with a voting system, or comments sections is that people
aren't/shouldn't comment until after they've tried the product and by then it's
unlikely they will return to the download page to cast a vote or make a comment.
This could be encouraged by having people sign up to be able to download and when
they attempt to download a file it will remember their previous X number of
downloads and remind them to vote/comment on them. It shouldn't be intrusive, but
just a friendly reminder, that could be disabled/ignored on a per download basis
(but not completely or permanently turned off).

Another way of getting the cream to rise to the top would be to have moderated
and unmoderated download categories. Moderated downloads would be those which
have passed some basic requirments for completeness, usefulness, quality, etc.
All contributions are first place in the unmoderated (unapproved files)
categories. From there, they can be nominated for the moderated categories.

Other types of categories could be useful as well, such as a hall of fame,
pick of the week, etc.

I think Micro-Money is not too serious thing now
and doesn't require voting, moderating, categories,
cops, sheriffs, police, prisons etc. smile

I'd like to see some friendly Euphorians jocular game
on that Micro-Economy place and under its old good name.

Getting recognition for your work in the form of micro-economy bux or votes is
encouraging, but will always have the potential for some kinds of abuse. A
voting system might lead to the same kind of "rating inflation" I've noticed on
music upload sites such as Acid Planet. There are a number of artists there with
artificially high average ratings, simply because they've provided lots of
positive reviews to others and have received a "quid pro quo" pat on the back in
return. I would hate to see a system implemented that lauds established
excellence at the cost of ignoring promising newbie efforts.

Oh, yes, we always can to abuse something or even anything, but
our Micro-Economy was very resistant to that abuse over Rob's
efforts to keep it equitable. Micro-Money was RDS money, so Rob
knew better than any one else what to do with that money.

That Micro-Economy was a *donating* system first of all, "voting"
stands just in quotation marks, as you can see on M-E page.

Now the full Euphoria package is free, so for monthly $3 smile of registered
user you can buy ... what?

Rob, couldn't you sell something, say, licenced RDS CDs with
collection of all versions of Euphoria plus the current
RDS site content?

Maybe, I just do not know. Or just sell some cool not open RDS program?

Or just keep that system as some kind of new game, as I said?

Let's think, at least...

Yes, "voting" is not very good thing for these purposes,
all these ratings, stars, ballyhoo, hoop-la ... I do not
like.

7. Registration

To all and sundry,

Apropos of nothing, I am announcing my status as a fully registered member
of this august group. Whenever RDS gets around to sending me my download key
or whatever that they send, I will get my full version. For those who were
hoping that I would go away, tough luck:) For those who have replied
thoughtfully and helpfully to my notes, thanks...and let us continue. Truly,
this is one of the most helpful groups that I have seen in this business.
Even rude or unruly types usually manage to get answers with minimum flame.

Your download instructions were sent automatically
a few minutes after you registered this afternoon
at DigiBuy. Unfortunately, the e-mail "bounced" at
your server, cvn.com. It was just a "soft" bounce, so
it will be automatically retried for the next few days.
For good measure I just sent you the instructions manually.
